Labor Day is when the State Fair picks the best fried food item that will lead the dining options on the midway this Fair season. We just received notice of the finalists, and it looks pretty delicious this year. Think about fried Nutella or fried millionaire pie. Yea, it will be a fun year. We will be on the scene to snap up photos and get a taste preview next week and let you know our picks.

Until then check out the list of finalists who are competing this year. And it made us laugh that multi-year winner Abe Gonzales named his company Vandalay Industries, after the bogus George Costanza company from Seinfeld. Remember, winning this coveted prize could mean as much as an additional $250,000 in sales during the State Fair.   Continue reading

Big Tex In Recovery

big tex 2011 002By Dallas Small             photos by Robert Bostick

Where would State Fair of Texas officials take Big Tex to recover following his accident on the last weekend of this year’s exposition?

Sue Gooding, State Fair of Texas vice president for public and community relations, said, “As we deliberated that question, a staff member came up with one of those flashes of the blindingly obvious—A spa. Why not a spa?”   Continue reading

Helicopter To The State Fair Compliments Of The Palomar Hotel Dallas

by Steven Doyle

As the State Fair of Texas approaches we will start hearing about all sorts of deals and attractions with the Big Tex theme. This one from the Palomar Hotel Dallas is more delicious that a box of Fletcher’s Corny Dogs. They are actually offering two Big Tex packages.

The package for $189, which is a good value, offers a room, DART rail passes to the fair, chef Graham’s triple fried potatoes and cotton candy in the room.  Every room gets use of the corporate gold fish regardless.       Continue reading

Fried Jambalaya and Fried Bacon Cinnamon Roll Take Top Fair Fried Honors

by Steven Doyle

It’s that time of year again when the State Fair food vendors roll out their deep fryers from storage in an attempt to win the top prize for the wackiest fried food imaginable. Last week we listed the finalists which consisted of eight out of over forty new items being introduced this year. Winning the competition is said to be worth an extra $200,000 in sales to the winner, so the stakes are high and the competition is fierce.

Abel Gonzalez was back and won the top award with his fried jambalaya ball. Abel’s offering had a crispy outer shell filled with a spicy rice, sausage and shrimp mélange with a side of his own kicked up ranch dressing. This is the very same gent who concocted fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches,  fried coca cola, fried cookie dough and more recently a win for his fried butter.         Continue reading

Meet the Fair’s Butter Lady

by Steven Doyle     photos by Robert Bostick

There is little doubt you have seen culinary sculptures in your life time, those made of ice and even melons. But have you seen sculpture in butter? Sharon BuMann does just that for many state fairs across the country, including the Texas State Fair. She has been having her way with butter since 1994. We sat down with a few toast points, jam and the butter lady for a few questions.    Continue reading
