Finalists for 15th Annual Big Tex Awards

The final countdown to three of the most coveted food titles in all of Texas begins. The State Fair of Texas is proud to present the 15th Annual Big Tex Choice Awards.

On Sunday, August 25, three winners will be crowned in the categories of: “Best Taste – Sweet,” “Best Taste – Savory,” and “Most Creative.” The competition began in early July with an impressive 49 entries represented by 30 concessionaires. Of those entries, 33 were selected as semi-finalists. Each entry was evaluated on four Fair-food elements: uniqueness, creativity, presentation, and taste. After some tasty tests and delicious dishes, votes were cast and the results are finally in! Now, the top ten finalists must present themselves to a prestigious panel of celebrity judges in hopes of securing one of the top spots. If your favorite entry did not make the final cut, fret not, concessionaires may still choose to introduce their creation at their stand as a new food during this year’s Fair. Continue reading →

State Fair Announces  15th Annual Big Tex Choice Awards

State Fair of Texas concessionaires are officially off to the races with a new lineup of incredible, edible innovations for the public to taste. The 15th Annual Big Tex Choice Awards  is offering another year of exciting bites for all appetites. From savory snacks to sweet treats, 2019’s assortment will not disappoint! After much deliberation in the first round of judging, the scores have been tallied and the results are in; 33 semi-finalists have been named to move forward. Comprised of 20 savory and 13 sweet entries, these semi-finalist contenders are one step closer to the main event, where they will compete for one of three winning titles: “Best Taste – Sweet,” “Best Taste – Savory,” and “Most Creative.” Continue reading →

Semi-finalists who don’t make it to the awards ceremony can choose to add their dish to their menu that year.

Big Winners at 2018 State Fair Food Competition

The build up was immense and the talk of the town as  Texas gears up for its annual State Fair and all the crazy and mostly delicious new fair food items. The wait is over as the judges weighed in and the winners are: “Best Taste – Savory” goes to the Hoppin’ John Cake with Jackpot Sauce by Winter Family Concessions, while the Arroz con Leche (or Sweet Crispy Rice) by the Garza Family wins “Best Taste – Sweet,” and “Most Creative” goes to the Cotton Candy Taco by Justin & Rudy Martinez. Judge Dismisses Lawsuit Against the State Fair of Texas

Judge Tonya Parker of the 116th District Court in Dallas has dismissed a lawsuit brought against the State Fair of Texas by the Austin law firm Riggs & Ray, P.C., which appeared to be acting to further the political agenda of a party that does not want the State Fair at Fair Park in Dallas. The lawsuit alleged that the State Fair is a “governmental body” subject to the Texas Public Information Act. In fact, the State Fair of Texas is a private Texas nonprofit corporation granted tax-exempt status by the Internal Revenue Service under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and is not supported by any governmental money. Judge Parker dismissed the lawsuit under the Texas Citizens Participation Act (Texas’ “Anti-SLAPP” law) concluding that the Fair is not a governmental body and awarded the State Fair attorney’s fees, expenses and sanctions totaling $298,206.59.
