An Dallas Evening with Johnny Schuler of Pisco Porton

If you have been out on the town in recent weeks you may have noticed an escalation of a particular spirit on the cocktail menus. Pisco is a colorless or amber toned grape brandy made in Peru since the 16th century by Spanish settlers. Since that time pisco has been distilled using traditional methods, and Pisco Porton is one of the finer examples of the product. The Pisco Porton master distiller, Johnny Schuler is in the DFW area all week. Schuler resides in Lima, Peru where he owns restaurants and has an entertaining television program that features Pisco Porton.    Continue reading

Pop-Up Angel’s Envy Mint Julep Competition At The Dram

The bartenders at The Dram were surprised when they showed up for a last minute staff meeting only to find Trina Nishimura waiting for them with a box of crazy ingredients.  You know Trina from Cedars Social where she bartends and makes some pretty fantastic cocktails.  Now Trina is the Dallas representative for the smooth and boozy Angel’s Envy, a divine small batch Kentucky whiskey. Angel’s Envy uses the unique process of finishing their bourbon in port wine barrels. Designed by Lincoln Henderson, the former Brown Forman master distiller and creator of Woodford Reserve, Angel’s Envy is the culmination of over 40 years experience in the distilling industry.

As the four bartenders wandered into their office they found unusual ingredients. “We have caper berries, cocoa nibs, and all sorts of sodas and syrups,” said Trina yesterday afternoon.     Continue reading

Benefit For Andrew Lostetter

Andrew Lostetter has been a bartender in the Dallas area for over fourteen years; he has grown as a barmen moving from Consilient (Fireside Pies on Henderson and Sense) to join the team at Neighborhood Services Tavern, then on to The Marquee Grill in Highland Park Village. Andrew has been on the forefront of the cocktail movement in Dallas and has frequently been seen shaking cocktails for various charities around Dallas, including Bar 828 in Oak Cliff, and the HID IN pop-up bar that had a brief stint in Deep Ellum.

Recently Andrew experienced an epic ski accident that left him with a fractured pelvis in four places, dislocated sacrum from his pelvis and fractured two of his vertebrae.  Two surgeries later Andrew is back in Dallas undergoing further treatment.    Continue reading
