ZestFest Blazes New Trails In Fiery Eating Madness

Each year I typically spend months working up to a few million Scoville units’ worth of packing heat. Then the big survival test comes at ZestFest, the largest gathering of spicy foods and spicy foods aficionados of the year. Aisle after aisle of hotness purveyors offered samples at the 10th annual expo, held this past weekend at the expansive Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas. JR’s Grill For Burgers and Wing Clandestine Lunch

I get great food tips each day from people literally all over the world. It is fun hearing people wax on about their favorite pizza, tacos or cheeseburgers. It is this fantastic feedback that keeps me moving each day. Last week I had the good fortune to hear from Mondo Mike, you probably remember Mondo from the morning radio program hosted by Chris Jagger when he was on 105.3FM. Mondo is well known for his burger eating abilities, and has grazed his way through every burger in the DFW area. The man also is a graduate of El Centro’s culinary program.

I recall a conversation with Mondo last year when he told me about a burger restaurant off of Greenville Avenue in Dallas that was so underground that you had to crawl over a fence in a field to enjoy their offerings. That is pretty wacky, but this is Mondo we are talking about. The guy has this amazing energy that will inspire you to crawl fences. Continue reading →

Quaker Steak and Lube Opens Today

Last night we were invited to check out the latest edition of Quaker Steak and Lube, the casual dining chain hailing from Pennsylvania that is best known for their mountains of chicken wings and sauce choices. There were sampled most of what the restaurant had to offer and had a chance to visit with the CEO, John H. Longstreet.

The chicken wings recently became famous when Travel Channel’s Man vs Food host Adam Richman tackled the Triple Atomic challenge by devouring wings sauced with a searing 500,000 Scoville rated madness. That ventures well past the Scotch Bonnet and Habanero territory, and can be quite maddening on the palate. Continue reading →

Do Not Confuse Snookies With Snooki

A few weeks back we mentioned that the Snookies Bar and Grill in Carrollton would soon be replaced with a Liberty Burger. However the Oak Lawn location in Dallas is bustling along at break-neck speeds, and the mere mention of the restaurant-bar made us lose control recently and we had to pay our respects.

The chicken fried steak has always been a mainstay at Snookies, and we heard legend of the chicken wings, so that is what we ordered. Continue reading →
