Wings are definitely the perennial fiery bar snack that can be shared by the basket, or devoured solo for a quick meal taken with a very cold beer or a soothing pinot noir. Dallas has their share of very good examples, and much more that are flat on flavor. The latter are of the frozen and pre-sauced variety; an abomination unto mankind. However, done well the wing can be spirited, imaginative, and definitely make you yearn for more.
A perfect wing has a delicate balance of tender white meat that oozes its own juices with a fine balance of sauce and very little decor. A bit of crudité and side of house-made blue cheese dressing is perfect. Some have elevated this combination, others take on an interesting ethnic twist. Well, you went and did it. You did the beer before liquor and now have never been sicker. Or perhaps too many sulfites from that red wine you blasted through last night. Or you simply just drank too much and now are suffering an epic hangover. We get it. No, we really get it and have a cure for that. We have a few hangover relief tricks, plus a list of some really good local foods that will help ease the pain of the season.

One of the greatest late night meals I have experienced in a long time was after a party in the King William District in San Antonio. It was nearing 1am and I had a hunger that only food would cure. Fortunately for me, there was a beacon that cried out in the night, not too unlike a blazing holy grail, and it leads me to the path of Hot Joy.
Hot Joy is all about the funkiness. The decor is cheesy Asian resell, the drinks are blow-me-down crazy good. The food, well the food is a blend of fusion that may have lost its way, but in a good sense of deliciousness. Here you will find a bowl of ramen such as the Double Miso with its shitake sofrito, burnt garlic oil, baby corn and soft egg that is ever so delicious. Get it further un-vegetarian-ized by adding pork belly for an extra 4 bucks. They also make a more traditional Tonkotsu ramen. Continue reading
Since opening in 2007, Greenville Avenue Pizza Company has worked hard to establish itself in Dallas— persevering through a recession, riding out neighborhood development and even changing its business model to embrace delivery. The little pizza shop’s drive has paid off, as Fortune magazine has just named GAPCo one of this year’s 100 fastest-growing inner city companies, as ranked by the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City.
With an impressive five-year growth rate of 324%, GAPCo earned the #34 spot in the ranking. And they’re not done yet, as the company is opening a second location soon and hopes to open several more in the next few years. Continue reading
Pluckers Wing Bar will host its annual NFL Draft Party on Thursday, April 30 at all 17 locations. Guests can team up to win food and drink specials by predicting this year’s NFL draft picks during the televised event.
Specials will range from $1 off to half price to even free. Pluckers will also give away a 55” Smart LED HDTV at each location. Guests can register to win upon arrival. The winner will be chosen by drawing held at the end of the NFL Draft Party (winner must be present to win).

Last month Uptown’s Ketchup Burger Bar took on a new patina replete with a name and menu revamp. The popular burger haunt located at 3208 N Hall, just off McKinney Avenue, now has a sleek sexy atmosphere along with a fun bar menu made up of burgers and wings, along with the new name The Sir. The restaurant is still owned by Yaser Khalaf (Souk, Baboush), and is now joined in partnership with brothers Niko and J.D. Ybañez and their friend Ben Scott, a recent contestant on television’s “Bachelor in Paradise”.
The consulting chef is Souk’s Norman Grimm who was looking for a great product at a very affordable price point. The burgers range from a simple cheeseburger, loaded with some pretty terrific bread and butter pickles, to a more outrageous PB&J version with peanut butter and jelly along with bacon and jalapenos. Sounds a bit out there, but excellent in its execution. There is also a loaded burger with a fried egg, and seriously eggs are the perfect burger condiment, apple smoked bacon and fried onion rings.
