The Fort Worth Opera begins its 66th Season on May 12 (running through June 3). Here’s how to decide which opera to see, or to impress your date:
Marriage of Figaro
- Will make you laugh
Plot: What happens after The Barber of Seville, when “happily ever after” isn’t as blissful as imagined
Tosca
- Tradtional “grand opera” with BIG sets and HUGE chorus
Plot: White-knuckled thrill ride of lust, deceit and revenge – more drama than any soap opera or Hollywood blockbuster. Think GCB and Glee.
Three Decembers
- Puts you close to the action
- Same kinds of ups and downs in your own family
Plot: An aging Broadway diva and her adult son and daughter learn to forgive each other despite decades of lies, disappointment and grief
Lysistrata
- See an up-and-coming DFW soprano
- See a regional premiere and brag to your friends you’ve seen something they haven’t
- More contemporary than traditional
Plot: The Athenian and Spartan women refuse to make love until their men stop making war, and the resulting stalemate creates some hilarious and heartbreaking consequences
This season includes traditional works like The Marriage of Figaro and Tosca, as well as regional premieres of Lysistrata and Three Decembers.
I think you’ll find the delightful cast members will make for a fun, out-of-the-ordinary night out that will expose you to the wonderful arts being offered all across North Texas.
