After a week of confusing and erroneous reports I spoke to Dallas Morning News CEO and publisher Jim Moroney who confirmed that the Dallas Morning News Wine Competition goes ahead as usual in 2015. Reports that the Dallas Morning News (DMN) was getting out of the wine competition business after 31 years were wrong. The competition proceeds with no diminution in its scope or importance.
Separately, Texsom is starting a brand new, separate, wine competition which will be in its first year in 2015. No details are posted on the Texsom web site thus far. For the 2014 year, the two organizations cooperated on producing the Dallas Morning News Competition which was renamed the “Dallas Morning News and Texsom Wine Competition”. Rebecca Murphy, who the DMN consulted with to produce the DMN competition, will produce the Texsom competition. A comment from Murphy was unavailable by press time.
The upshot of all this appears to be that Dallas will have two national wine competitions in 2015 instead of one. Likely a good thing for consumers.
