A Visit to Little Katana

DSC00064by Steven Doyle

Nestled on the corner Travis and Knox, Little Katana quietly serves up sushi and Korean dishes to neighborhood patrons who pack the house all through the week. Monday is the perfect day to acquaint yourself with this little gem as it is half price sushi rolls and bottles of wine and sake. For the uninitiated, you may wish to start your dinner with the sampler platter which includes Crab Tempura, Seared Ahi Tuna, Shrimp and Lump Crab Cake and Coconut Shrimp Tempura served with an Asian Slaw.

You may have also heard the name Little Katana bandied about with regards to the new addition of restaurants at Dallas Omni downtown. Let us chat about this little sushi wonder for a bit:

Particularly enjoyable on the appetizer side of the menu are several hot rocks where the guest becomes the cook, sizzling bits of Kobe steak or thin slices of Maine lobster. Both are served with a spread of delicious sauces.  Other apps you may wish to check out are the Shumai which are steamed and packed with flavor. Often you will find these dumplings rubbery, but Katana’s version are soft and supple.    Continue reading

Eat Me: Shrimp and Grits at Standard Pour

tsp1by Steven Doyle

Some may mistakenly thing that a super bar like The Standard Pour might be lacking in the area of the food menu. That has never been the case, even since its early inception. In the past year with the new menus introduced by chef Cody Sharp dining at this now famous Dallas bar has reached heights unknown to any bar in town, and certainly rivals that of most restaurants.    Continue reading

First Look: Slurp Your Noodle at Wabi House

DSC08048by Steven Doyle

Wabi House was built on Wabi House chef-owner Dien Nguyen’s love for Japanese food and obsession for ramen, inspired by his foodie experiences and culinary training in major cities like NYC, Toronto, Vancouver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle. For the past decade, Chef Nguyen has worked with Piranha Killer Sushi and currently holds the Corporate Head Chef position for Piranha Killer Sushi. He’s lead the opening of the new locations and oversees the seven Piranha locations in Texas.

Wabi comes from the word Wabi-Sabi. Wabi-Sabi is a Japanese world view embracing and accepting the beauty in the imperfection (Wabi) & the beauty that comes with age (Sabi). This Japanese view best describes what to expect of Chef Dien Nguyen’s restaurant location choice, concept and style of cooking.  Continue reading

In and Out of Favor

woman-drinking-beerby Blanton Webb

Though the bar as an institution is often associated with talks of politics, opinions, and off-color humor, there is one question that never fails to grab my attention. “…So what’s your favorite kind of drink?” Whether it’s asked by the bartender trying to guide a guest to a selection or just a couple of patrons striking up a conversation over one concoction or another, that simple query has led to some of the most interesting conversations I have ever participated in or eavesdropped upon. It doesn’t matter what kind of place it is, or what kind of drinks the people are talking about, the qualities that make something a favorite for someone can say a lot about our taste.  Continue reading
