Oak Cliff’s “The Pig Stand” Changed The Way Americans Dine

The pig is so much more than bacon. From the lowly swine we have experienced much in the way of restaurant innovation; innovation that started right here in Dallas. Texas. In October of 1921 Jessie Kirby built hi very first of what would soon be a successful string of drive-in’s called The Pig Stand. The success of the idea surrounded with the notion that people were just too lazy to get out of their cars. Kirby brought the lazy drivers to his stand and were met by very young teenage boys decked out in white shorts and black bow ties who earned the title ‘carhops’ because they would jump on the running boards of cars often as soon as they hit the parking lot. Woodfire Kirby’s Closes Tonight
by Steven Doyle Woodfire Kirby’s, located at 3525 Greenville directly across from the Granada Theater will shutter tonight after its last service, which is anticipated to be a full house of long time regulars. Woodfire Kirby’s is kin to Kirby’s Steakhouse but has roots that date back to 1921 in Oak Cliff with a then innovative Pig Stand. We will follow up this story with one that regales the historic Pig Stand, but the latest incarnation opened in October of 2009 so this marks a sad day in restaurant history. Continue reading

Exclusive: ZaLat to Open Second Location in Plano

More news from the King of Late Night, Khanh Nguyen who owns both DaLat, the interesting and quirky pho restaurant with the late night hours, and ZaLat, the pizzeria that has even later hours. Both restaurants are located on Fitzhugh. Today Khanh tells craveDFW that he plans another location, and actually signed a new lease just after midnight this morning. The new Zalat will be located on the northwest corner of Legacy and Independence Parkway in the Legacy Village Shopping Center at 7224 Independence Parkway. It will mirror the Fitzhugh location exactly and only serve take out and delivery. This is in a former Domino’s Pizza location. Continue reading

The long waited tastes from back home of Chicago has arrived this year with Al’s Italian Beef in Dallas and the newly opened Gino’s East pizzeria in Arlington. I was the very first customer at Al’s Italian Beef when it opened in February. First bite of the true Chicago dreams to get that taste in their mouths again from back home right in their backyards here in Dallas-Fort Worth.
Al’s Italian beef proved to Texas how many Chicagoans miss their favorites when they ran out of food the very first week in February. Folks coming in from all over the metroplex and buying everything they could, cooked or not, I was told. They just bought all the tamales right from the freezer. Continue reading
