Boots is a Legacy Burger in Rockwall

In the heart of Rockwall, Texas, Boots Burgers has been a cornerstone of local culinary tradition since its inception in 1968. David Mooney, the current owner and son of the founder, Clarence “Boots” Mooney, says they say Boots Burgers was founded in 1968 because “that’s as far back as we can remember.” The house that is the restaurant remains a beloved destination for both residents and visitors, celebrated for its commitment to quality and tradition.

“I’m pretty sure it goes back further, but I can’t remember for sure,” Mooney said. “Everyone called my dad Boots, that’s where the name came from. Before this place, he had three other places in Rockwall, including a drive-in restaurant.”

“When his dad started this thing, back then all you had to do was go and ask your neighbors, and if they all said ok, that was it,” David Mooney added. “And that’s how he started it.”

Boots Burgers is more than just a burger spot; it’s a legacy passed down through generations. The small, unassuming establishment, often identified by the line of patrons waiting outside, operates out of the original family home where Boots himself lived.

Visiting Boots Burgers is like stepping back in time. The menu is refreshingly simple, focusing on what they do best: burgers. Each burger is made to order, featuring a juicy, hand-formed patty, crispy lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, and mustard, sandwiched between toasted buns. What sets these burgers apart is their homemade quality and the secret seasoning that has been a family guarded recipe for decades. All this deflects inflation. The burger is on the cheap.

The ambiance of Boots Burgers complements its food. The outdoor seating area, adorned with picnic tables, allows diners to enjoy their meals under the Texan sky, contributing to a casual, friendly dining experience. It’s common to see a diverse mix of patrons, from teenagers enjoying a quick bite after school to older couples reliving their youth.

Boots Burgers isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a community hub. It has garnered recognition beyond Rockwall for its outstanding burgers. Praised for its commitment to quality and tradition, it has been featured in various regional publications and food shows, which applaud not only the taste but the timeless appeal of the establishment.

Order early, when we run out, we’re done

Despite its popularity, Boots Burgers has faced challenges, particularly with the changing dynamics of the fast-food industry and the increasing pressures of modernization. However, the family remains committed to preserving the original charm and quality of Boots’ creations. They’ve resisted expanding or franchising, focusing instead on maintaining the quality and experience that have become synonymous with their name.

For anyone passing through Rockwall or residing nearby, a visit to Boots Burgers is a must. It’s more than just eating a burger; it’s about experiencing a piece of local history and enjoying a meal that has been crafted with decades of love and dedication. Boots Burgers remains a testament to the enduring appeal of good, simple food served with a warm, personal touch.

Boots Burgers is not just a meal; it’s an experience, one that continues to charm and satisfy generations of burger enthusiasts. As they say at Boots, you come for the burgers but stay for the warmth and nostalgia.
