Angelo George opened his barbecue joint on White Settlement Road in Fort Worth in 1958 with four dining tables, a stand-up counter, and not much else. He ran it with his wife, June, and his brother, Orville. It was as much a beer joint as a restaurant in those early years, the kind of place where the smoked meat was the reason people showed up but the cold beer was the reason they stayed.

Charles Kincaid opened a grocery store on Camp Bowie Boulevard in Fort Worth in 1946. Nobody involved that year had any reason to think they were starting a hamburger institution. It was a neighborhood market, the first in the area to run separate specialty departments, and its full-service meat counter was the part of the business that would eventually swallow everything else.

Karla Orta started selling native plants out of the back of her RAV4. Then her parents’ driveway. Then she opened a nursery on White Settlement Road in Fort Worth, and when people kept showing up and lingering, she put a café next to it. Nativo Café y Bodega opened May 16, and the two businesses now sit side by side at 1701 White Settlement Road — native plants on one side, espresso and focaccia on the other.

Chef Jeff Williams and his wife Julie opened Taste on December 5, 2017, at 1200 S. Main Street on Fort Worth’s Near Southside — the city’s largest food desert — with a straightforward premise: pay what you can, pay what you want, or pay nothing at all. Nobody is turned away. Nobody is asked to explain themselves. You walk in, you order, you eat, and you leave whatever feels right.

Fred’s Texas Cafe has been feeding Fort Worth since 1978, back when the restaurant was a scrappy outpost in a then-overlooked stretch of West Seventh, long before that part of town turned into Artisan Circle and everything around it got expensive. Forty-eight years later, the burger joint that built its reputation on Fred Burgers and ice-cold schooners is celebrating two birthdays at once, and it’s giving Crowley the gift.

The Cortez family already has a Michelin recommendation. Two of them, back to back, in 2024 and 2025, for a taqueria on East Rosedale that does one thing and does it as well as anywhere in Texas. Now they’re opening a second restaurant, and if the first one is any indication of how they operate, Fort Worth should pay close attention.
