Behind The Stick: Sundown At The Granada’s Josh Hendrix

by Jason Kosmas

Sundown at the Granada is a true revitalization of the once deteriorating Greenville Avenue. Boasting local and seasonal dishes, many vegetarian options and craft beers, it also can be proud of Josh Hendrix. There is something very innocent about Josh Hendrix yet at the same time you feel like you are talking to the reincarnation of Hunter S. Thompson. He has an unyielding child-like passionate for the craft of making great cocktails that makes you feel good about what you are drinking.

This adds up to pride without arrogance and Josh delivers straight-forward well thought out drinks on his menu at Sundown. He is eager to learn and to pass on what he has discovered to others. I shared some drinks with Josh at the Granada and we talked about how he got into the craft of cocktail making. Hopefully this interview will get me a chance to bartend for the band JJ Grey and Mofro who is playing at the Granada on October 26th (yes Josh, I was serious).          Continue reading

Behind the Stick: The Libertine’s Mate Hartai

by Jason Kosmas

The first time I had a conversation with Mate Hartai was a late night at the Windmill Lounge. Everything we talked about quickly went under a microscope-getting into the finer details of each subject. Music, bartending, food, it quickly occurred to me that Mate was the kind of guy that had to know the science and physics of everything he was passionate about. Some people exude passion in different ways. For him, he was beyond childhood curiosity with every subject he put his mind to and that level of dedication is out of pure appreciation and respect.

Mate has been the driving force behind The Libertine Bar on Greenville for over 3 years now. He was quick to point out that even though he put his full energy behind every aspect of this unassuming neighborhood joint, he is only continuing the work set up by the owners. Mate is great guy to “wax intellectual” with and has that timeless bartender sage persona from his facial hair to the dry wit of his social commentary.  Continue reading

We were out tooling around this morning and stumbled upon something new and exciting in the old Ali Baba location at 1906 Greenville Avenue. As a matter of fact we spotted Scott Jones from street level and turned the craveMOBILE around to get a chat and a photo.    Continue reading

Nora Is A Sweet Afghan Surprise

by Steven Doyle

It’s been about a single month since Nora opened its doors and we had a first look at the opening festivities which included dancing, plenty of music and great food. One month later the music is a bit muted but the food is rolling strong in this beefed up outpost for the dearly loved North Dallas Afghan Grill.

Located on lowest Greenville Avenue in what is fast becoming a freshly revitalized area of Dallas, Nora is a little gem that is all nice and shiny. The same chef is working the grill as the North Dallas haunt, and they are using the same techniques. Giant flames from the largish gas grill kiss the lamb kabobs just as the grill does at Afghan. The flavors are very similar because the recipes are the same.      Continue reading

Grand Opening Fete Of Nora

by Steven Doyle

Last night we attended the grand opening celebration of Nora, the newest incarnation from that family that brought us the highly regarded restaurant Afghan Grill. The beautiful restaurant is long and lean inside with a nice sized patio that is inviting. The event was attended by friends and family of the owners, Rosalind Lynam and Matt Pikar. Rosalind whizzed about the restaurant making guests feel comfortable while husband Matt bounced between kitchen and tables.

The restaurant is located on Lowest Greenville Avenue and has actually been open for some weeks during an initial soft opening that has attracted many hungry guests who are already swearing by the food and recipes of Pikar. It is the quintessential family restaurant.   Continue reading

Brass Knuckle Corn Dog Beat Down At Libertine

by Steven Doyle

There were many celebrations in the past few days as we observed Independence Day around the DFW area. One of our favorite traditions for the past few years has been the corn dog ballyhoo at the Libertine Bar on lowest Greenville Avenue in Dallas. The celebration has since been renamed the Brass Knuckle Corn Dog Beat Down and offers a trophy and $100 for anyone that can stuff the most corn dogs down their gullet in a short 15 minute time frame.              Continue reading

Lemonade Stand To Benefit Breast Cancer Research

by Steven Doyle

After leaving happy hour at The Grape last evening I whizzed past what looked to be a rather unusual lemonade stand on Greenville Avenue. I had to slam the breaks and back up for closer inspection. The little guys running 2 Guys Lemonade Stand were real life brothers Peter and Harry.

While waiting to chat up the brothers, Peter was busily pouring lemonade for a few walk-up customers and Harry kept cups and straws from flying away with the occasional wind gust that tapped the sturdy, well-made booth.    Continue reading
