Javier’s Nearly 50 With Mexico City Still on the Menu

Flaming Coffee

Somewhere around 5 p.m. every night, the lights come up at Javier’s Gourmet Mexicano on Cole Avenue and the regulars start drifting in. There’s no lunch here and never has been. Javier’s does dinner, and it has been doing dinner since 1977. Do the math and you land on a big one. Next year the place turns 50, and Javier Gutierrez is still the name on the sign. That doesn’t happen much in Dallas.

Gutierrez was born in 1950 and spent his childhood in Mexico City before his family moved to Texas when he was 12. By the time he opened his own restaurant he was still in his twenties, and he knew what he wanted to cook. He wanted the food of the capital, the more continental style he grew up eating, with tenderloin and red snapper on the menu instead of combination plates.

As Knox Street Grows Up, Cafe Madrid Stays Right Where It Is

Donica Jimenez fell for Spain in a high school classroom. Her Spanish teacher at Hockaday used to come back from trips abroad with slides, and those pictures brought the country to life for her. “I fell in love with Spain before I ever went there,” Jimenez has said.

She went on to study Spanish and Iberian culture and history at SMU. In 1989 she noticed a lease sign in a window on Travis Street and did something very practical. She measured the drive from her house. It came to 1.8 miles. She wanted to stay close to home, and that was close enough. The following year she opened Cafe Madrid at 4501 Travis St., at the corner of Armstrong, one block south of Knox.

Stay Darlin’ Brings Western Charm to Henderson Avenue

Henderson Avenue has a new bar with a twang, and it landed in exactly the right spot.

Stay Darlin’ opened this summer at 2929 N. Henderson Ave., in the old Sissy’s Southern Kitchen space, right where Tecovas, McKinney Hat Company, and Rancher Hat Bar have all set up shop within a block of each other. Put a boot store on three corners of an intersection and eventually somebody opens a bar to match. Stay Darlin’ is that bar.

Henderson Avenue’s Comeback Restaurant, Romy, is Still on Track for December

Henderson Avenue’s long-anticipated overhaul is close enough to done now that its restaurant lineup is starting to feel real. PopUp Bagels opened its second Dallas location on the street this summer. Salt & Straw made its Texas debut nearby. And the anchor tenant everyone’s been waiting on, a Tristan Simon restaurant called Romy, is still on track to open at 2110 N. Henderson Ave. this December, right as the rest of the ten-building Henderson East project wraps construction.

Parlor Doughnuts Is Coming to Henderson Avenue; Here’s Where to Find One in DFW Right Now

Parlor Doughnuts is coming to Henderson Avenue, and if you’ve been watching the construction at 2802 N. Henderson — the small standalone building that used to be a clothing store — that’s what’s going in. No confirmed open date yet, but the brand is on the official website, the address is live, and franchisee Ben Burkett has been talking about it since early 2026. “You have all these great restaurants and nightlife but no place for people in the neighborhood to bring their kids and grab a doughnut and coffee,” he said when the deal was announced. He’s not wrong about the gap.

The Team Behind il Bracco Is Opening Something New on Knox Street; Here’s What We Know

Robert Quick and Matt Gottlieb have been running Western Addition Restaurant Group since 2018, and their track record in Dallas is hard to argue with. Il Bracco at Preston Center has held the most-booked restaurant ranking on OpenTable month after month. Bobbie’s Airway Grill at Preston-Royal found its footing quickly. Last spring, they took il Bracco to Scottsdale — the group’s first move outside Texas. Now they’re building something new, and it’s coming to Knox Street.

Mister Charles on Knox Street is a Theatrical Dining Experience

The building at 3219 Knox Street served people for more than a hundred years as the Highland Park Soda Fountain — milkshakes, grilled cheese, a landmark three generations of Park Cities families took for granted. It closed in 2018 when a 12-story office tower went up around it. The facade was preserved. Everything else changed.
