New Years Eve 2017 Dallas Dining Ideas

new-year-celebration-ideas-coverby Steven Doyle

New Years Eve is definitely the spark that lights the path for the upcoming year and 2018 will definitely be one for the record book. Look for bright food trends and amazing new restaurants that will be serving more plant-based proteins, bold ethnic flavors and street food, greater emphasis on both children’s meals (definitely untapped in Dallas) and breakfast, under-utilized meats and vegetables, offal and of course the burger will take an even stronger hold on the city.

That said, let’s take a more traditional look on the big night which falls on a Sunday this year. Here are some of our favorite dining options for this New Years Eve. Make those reservations today! Continue reading

Sneak Peek at Abacus’ New Year’s Eve Selection

abacusby Steven Doyle

New Years Eve 2015 is so very close and the very best restaurants are filling quickly. We have it on good authority that one of Dallas’ best fine dining establishments has some openings. Abacus, owned by chef Kent Rathbun, has been one of our very favorite restaurants in the city. It opened 16 years ago and ages like a fine wine. Many of our very top chefs have worked at Abacus, and Rathbun himself comes with an amazing pedigree. You may also know him from his winning stint on Iron Chef where he slayed Bobby Flay in an Elk challenge.

It isn’t very often that you are able to get a sneak peek at a New Year’s dinner as we have for you today. Abacus invited us in to taste and give a foreshadowing of the many dishes that will be offered New Year’s Eve. What a joy this was as the food that the chefs have prepared for the big night are all simply amazing. Each course you will have a choice of offerings that range from Naked Cowboy oysters with a Cava Mignonette, Blood Orange, Creme Fraiche and Sturgeon Caviar, to a delicious Golden and Red Beet dish heavy on Jumbo Lump Crab, a Meyer Lemon Creme Fraiche with Chicory and Chives.

Other fond selections include a Miso Butter Poached Main Lobster with a Shiitake Mushroom Dashi, Crispy Pork Belly, Fresh Ramen Noodles, Edamame and a Farm Fresh Egg. Talk about a flavor bomb.

Ziziki’s Surprised Us With Lucky Vasilopita And A Lavish New Year’s Day Brunch

Valsopita (1)

We recently told you our favorite good luck dishes from across the globe, and had a difficult time locating a proper Greek Vasilopita. After many more stones turned we finally found one. Actually, they are making this just for you, so take advantage!

Preston Hollow Ziziki’s is offering Vasilopita on its New Year’s Eve menu. This warm, rich, and buttery cake is the perfect ending to a great meal, and is a fun way to ring in the New Year. The Greek tradition dictates that you serve the cake to the youngest first, then the next to youngest, and so on, working up in age, and the person who finds a hidden coin or trinkets will have good luck for the year. Ziziki’s won’t be surprising you with any hidden objects baked inside the cake, but do hope that everyone who enjoys this fun tradition with us will find good fortune all year long.   Continue reading

McKinney Ave Sfuzzi Closes Tomorrow

IMG_4749by Steven Doyle

With the new year we will be seeing plenty of new dining options and watering holes spring up, and that is nothing but pure excitement for those of us at craveDFW. But with the good news also comes closures. Yesterday we were sent word that Sfuzzi would be shuttering January 1, 2014 with a hint of a possible return in the very near future. This all amid the discussion of bankruptcy centering around one of the principles, Robert Colombo and parent company, La Reve Consultants. Most of the discussion was hazed with inaccuracies, but what stood out as fact is that Sfuzzi’s last stand is tonight.

What I will personally miss most  is the bacon and egg pizza pictured above.    Continue reading
