Rob Shearer and Amy Wallace Cowan Bartending At Outpost This Wednesday Evening

outpostby Steven Doyle

Just over a month ago The Outpost began its local celebrity bartender night where they invite personalities from the area to bring their amateur bartending skills to the small Oak Cliff restaurant located on Beckley. The new owners, the same folks who brought us the wildly popular restaurants Bolsa and Smoke, to name a few, have taken an exciting pro-active leap to make Outpost a fun neighborhood destination.

Besides bringing in Smoke’s chef Tim Byres to update the menu, a special attention to fantastic cocktails and local brews as well as some exciting entertainment weekly. Wednesday is when the guest bartenders shuffle in, and with them comes a fun few hours where they become the mixologist. In recent weeks there have been some fun guests pop by to ply their expertise with proceeds from the tip jar going to the bartender’s cause of choice. The gig starts at 6pm. Continue reading →

TJ’s Collaborative Lionfish Dinner At Driftwood

Whole Lionfishby Joey Stewart

TJ’s Seafood and Driftwood held Dallas’ first ever Lionfish Dinner on Monday night, treating guests to five courses paired with wines. This invasive species, which is native to the Indo-Pacific, has found its way to the southeast coast of the U.S., Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico.

TJ’s owner and seafood guru, Jon Alexis, started off the evening informing diners of the issues surrounding the fish. “Lionfish have no predators, can lay up to 40 thousand eggs every three days, and eat anything and everything they can fit into their mouths. However we can become its predators. By eating them!”    Continue reading →

I Will Be Guest Bartender At Outpost Weds, Jan 8 And You Are Invited

bartenderby Steven Doyle

Recently we announced that Outpost on Beckley, which was opened by the design dream team John Paul Valverde and Miguel Vicens, was taken over by Compound Restaurant Management, the same folks who own Bolsa and Smoke as well as many other fine dining establishments in Oak Cliff and West Dallas.  There has been a heavy push to see that the tiny eatery succeeds, and the menu was quickly revamped by Smoke super star chef Tim Byres. In addition, the new owners have employed local musicians to fill the smallish space, as well as Gong Show style comedic karaoke nights.

The plan has been working, and Outpost has made a positive turn-around.    Continue reading →

Driftwood’s Fall Menu Is No Fish Tale

driftwoodby Melissa Robert

The temperatures are dropping and coats are finally being donned in Dallas, which can only mean one thing, Fall menus are upon us. Lucky North Texas diners are seeing new plates surface at their favorite eateries across the Metroplex. I had the pleasure of sharing a meal with colleagues Tuesday night at Driftwood near the Bishop Arts area of Oak Cliff. If you didn’t know why they created the DLink bus before, the seafood cuisine at Driftwood will leave no doubt in your mind that they are a fixture in the destination dining landscape.

With right around fifty seats, the dining room is intimate, and even on a Tuesday evening the patrons are plentiful and energetic. The outdoor space accommodates an additional twenty guests and features a fireplace as well as a second side to the main bar which is fully exposed when the accordion-style glass is folded back. While at the bar, inside or out, order a cocktail off the Fall drink menu. Behind the bar, Michael will whip up a Holy Grail with fresh cranberries and chai that will quench your liquid holiday needs. Also, look for a new bar bites menu to be available in the next week or two.    Continue reading →

My Last Meal At Dodd’s Central 214

grahamby Steven Doyle

Nothing rings change of seasons than Graham Dodds and his ever revolving menu. His menus are my personal equinox as seasons change, and I know I will always be tasting something amazingly fresh and new. Fortunately Dodds isn’t the only one in town doing this, but his menus grab with such flair and hospitality. What he has been doing at Central 214 is superbly special.

This is what was upsetting about the news that Dodds is leaving the Hotel Palomar restaurant and making a switch just a few miles down the road for Consilient’s shining star, Hibiscus, where he will work in tandem as co-chef alongside Jason Ferraro. Dodds will be cooking with the same attitude that he was born with. Perhaps this is only upsetting because I am not one for change, unless we are talking seasonal menus.    Continue reading →

Ten Bells Tavern Midnight Food Binge Continues With The Banh Mi

sharpby Steven Doyle

Midnight’s at Ten Bells Tavern in Bishop Arts is becoming the fashionable place to dine. This is where a list of chefs have occasionally lined up to take over the kitchen and feed the hungry masses with what is sometimes an experiment to gauge interest, as in the many ramen nights with Justin Holt, or simply to have fun doing what they do best, as in the case of chef April Barney who recently had her turn at the midnight shift at Ten Bells with her version of chicken and waffles.

I just heard from local chef Cody Sharp and he said it is time he made his favorite sandwich, the Banh Mi.  Continue reading →

Discovery Zone: Mac and Cheese Burger at 303 Grill

DSC09649by Steven Doyle

We have written plenty of burger stories in the past, and have penned a few top burger lists for the Dallas area. It seems these lists are outdated as quickly as they are posted, but that is what make this whole thing fun. You never really find the ultimate burger, but rather journey through pastured beef and freshly baked buns. Face it, we are all simply beef tourists.

This past weekend I stumbled upon another incredible burger that at first horrified me, but after a large chomp I was convinced I found something uniquely delicious. The Mac and Cheese Burger at 303 Grill in Oak Cliff should be knighted, or at least given an MBE.    Continue reading →

Oak Cliff Coffee Roasters is finally open. They are located at 819 W. Davis, immediately next to CocoAndre the chocolatier. The new coffee shop won’t be featuring WIFI, and there are no paper cups available. The coffee is strictly sold in ceramic mugs, and you can buy a mug to go if you so desire. This keeps the integrity of the coffee of espresso intact.     Continue reading →
