I am still suffering from the Oak Cliff Mardi Gras celebration yesterday, and especially thrilled by the ginormous parade as it tooled its way down Davis aiming eastward towards Bishop Arts. The sidewalks were brimming with cheering hoards as they were on the receiving end of beads, baubles and tiny treats. Continue reading

Dude, Sweet Hearts You
I love me some Dude, Sweet Chocolate, and not a week goes by that I don’t stop in for a visit and to snoop for something new from the warped and talented mind of Katherine Clapner. Be it her Trixie and Chim Chim bar which is a Szechuan peppercorn and lime chocolate bar, or the Fungus Amongus, a soft butter toffee made with porcini mushroom and pepitas.
Chef Clapner is always coming out with something new and interesting, and it pays to drop by one of the three locations which we list below. A recent visit netted a beautiful box of foie and caramel coins that was only available at the Preston Center shop. Continue reading

Bolsa Celebrates Red Caboose Winery With Special Dinner
On Thursday, February 7th, Red Caboose Winery and Executive Chef Jeff Harris of Bolsa and Bolsa Mercado will team up for a wine dinner in honor of Red Caboose Winery’s recent honor, Top 10 Hot Brands of 2012 by Wine Business Monthly.
Based in Meridian, Texas, Red Caboose Winery starts with quality from the ground up, using certified grafted grapevines to “grow” their wine. Red Caboose’s winery design philosophy is green. With simplicity in mind, they created a winery that is energy efficient and sustainable. Together with advanced geothermal cooling and photo-voltaic cells, they were able to achieve their energy goals. The winery produces about 5,000 cases per year with plans to increase production in the coming years. Continue reading

JR Richardson, president of Oak Cliff Cellars, held a reception Sunday to celebrate his third year of having his wines available in the Dallas area. The gathering was held at the Mary Tomas Gallery on Dragon Street in the Design District and was catered by Bridge Bistro owned by Kay Agnew.
Agnew, a good friend of Richardson, was on hand as well as a few area somms that enjoy the Oak Cliff Cellar wines such as Michael Flynn from the Mansion on Turtle Creek. Continue reading

Andrew Bell At Bolsa Mercado
Andrew Bell is a really good chef who has been looking to set down somewhere firm and presumably enjoyable. He was last seen in the flagship Nosh on Oak Lawn and since then fell off our radar. There were talks of Bell opening his own Nosh in Austin but that never came to fruition. He had worked with Avner Samuels in the past at Aurora. Myth had it he would be the opening chef at JoJo, and actually that was the plan. Continue reading

It Is Elvis Month At El Ranchito
The good folks at El Ranchito located on Jefferson in Oak Cliff really have a thing for Elvis. What I thought was an annual impersonator contest has become more commonplace that the usual mariachis. In fact, January has been designated as a tribute month with alternating weeks switching between a professionally produce Elvis program and Elvis impersonation contests. Continue reading

First Look: Outpost American Tavern
by Steven Doyle
When they aren’t uber-designing a new restaurant around Dallas or Fort Worth, the dynamic team of John Paul Valverde and Miguel Vicens are making a go at restaurateur life at the funky digs in Oak Cliff in what was once a single family dwelling, then their first born Campo Modern Country Bistro. Campo never really hit her stride despite all the fantastical elements you could possibly afford a restaurant, including a star consulting chef like Matt McCallister and finishing with one of the best kept secret chefs in Dallas, Michael Ehlert. By the way for those keeping score at home, Ehlert is in the kitchen at Hibiscus on Henderson.
A few months later and some serious hammer and nailing, the tiny house has been drawn into yet another hip and cozy dwelling for those seeking out a fresh take on classic food finds. Enter Outpost American Tavern. Now deep up in its first week with the doors wide open, the unique looking taproom is once again creating a buzz throughout the food loving community. Continue reading
