The whole idea behind a staycation is that you shouldn’t need the car. Headington Companies has spent over a decade proving that’s possible in one specific stretch of downtown Dallas, and this summer the company is pulling its own properties into one loose itinerary, a rooftop pool, a handful of restaurants, a hi-fi bar, a spa, and a 30-foot sculpture, all within a few blocks of each other around The Joule.

Every neighborhood should be so lucky as to have its history hold the best corner. In Deep Ellum, that corner is 2551 Elm Street, where the Knights of Pythias Temple has stood since 1916, designed by William Sidney Pittman, Texas’ first Black architect and son-in-law of Booker T. Washington. It was the first commercial building in Dallas built by, for, and with the money of Black citizens, and for more than two decades it served as the social heart of Black Dallas — its top-floor ballroom hosting dances, graduations, and the Fisk Jubilee Singers, its lectern held by the likes of George Washington Carver, while out on the street below, Blind Lemon Jefferson and Lead Belly were turning Deep Ellum into the blues capital of the Southwest.
Today the building carries its architect’s name as The Kimpton Pittman Hotel, and it remains the best argument in town that a building can change jobs without losing its soul.

The Ritz-Carlton, Dallas delivered a holiday staycation that exceeded every expectation, offering luxury, warmth, and culinary celebration at the highest level. Upon arrival, Executive Pastry Chef Corey Thomson personally greeted me with freshly baked chocolate chip cookies — still warm, aromatic, and delicately crisp on the edges. He followed with a private tour through all six kitchens, each one humming with thoughtful precision. The culinary teams prepare nearly everything from scratch, down to the hamburger buns. Chef Thomson tempers his own chocolate for a variety of intricate desserts, from glossy bonbons to jewel-like truffles, showcasing both technical mastery and artistry. His team was efficient, enthusiastic, and genuinely proud of their craft.
