How Far Can the US Go in the 2026 FIFA World Cup?

As we start counting down to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, there’s excitement brewing all over the world, particularly across the United States — and especially in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, as one of the host regions for the tournament. With around 9 matches set to take place in Dallas, locals are starting to look forward to some of the sport’s biggest stars lighting up the Texas skies. And, in the same breath, wondering just how far the US Men’s National Team can go on home soil against such competition.

Let’s face it, the team’s never been in a better position for a solid World Cup run. With a talented generation of both young and experienced players, the home-field advantage, and support like never before, this could well be the tournament that American soccer fans have been waiting for.

A Golden Generation

For the first time in literally decades, the USMNT has a number of players that are performing well in some of Europe’s top leagues. Christian Pulisic is thriving at AC Milan, Weston McKennie is impressing in Serie A – and there are players like Giovanni Reyna, Yunus Musah, and Tyler Adams who are getting valuable experience in the Bundesliga, Serie A and Premier League. These guys aren’t just fringe players either… they’re a big part of their clubs and will look to make the same impact in the US team.

By 2026, most of these players will be in their prime – and unlike 2022, when the lack of experience was one of the main reasons they went out in the Round of 16 to the Netherlands, this is a squad that should be battle-tested and psychologically ready to go head to head with the biggest players in the world.

The Home-Field Factor

Playing at home is also a major factor – and many host teams go further than expected. From South Korea’s unexpected run to the semifinals in 2002 to Russia’s quarterfinal finish in 2018, it’s not unusual for teams to perform way beyond expectations. For the US, having that passionate support could just give them the edge they need in a tight knockout game.

The DFW area knows a thing or two about high-stakes sports. With AT&T Stadium already famous for the Dallas Cowboys, it’s more than ready to host up to nine World Cup matches – and local fans will be coming out in force, creating an atmosphere that even the biggest teams might find intimidating.

Tactical Growth Under Berhalter

There were a lot of critics of Gregg Berhalter in the lead-up to and during the 2022 World Cup, but the team’s performance — especially in the group stage — showed that they were going in the right direction. They’ve now had more time to develop a system and experiment with tactics, so it’s highly likely they’ll be less predictable and more able to adapt to the different playing styles.

The 2026 squad won’t just need athleticism and technical skill —they’ll need to be tactical. They’ll need good game management and the mental strength to not crack under the intense pressure of those razor-thin margins, where one decision could make or break the outcome.

But There Are Hurdles…

While hopes are high, let’s not get too excited just yet. Reaching the semifinals or even winning the tournament would mean having to beat the biggest soccer nations in the world… countries like France, Brazil, or Argentina. The US still hasn’t really got a consistent goal scorer, and there’s still a lack of depth in certain positions — particularly centre-back and striker — and this could be a problem.

And then they have to try and manage the pressure of playing at home, which can be a double-edged sword for some. Support will be through the roof… but so will the expectations, which could be a problem for some of the younger, less experienced players.

So, How Far Can They Go?

Well, realistically, the USMNT has the potential to reach the quarterfinals – perhaps even the semis if they get a good draw… and it’s unlikely they’ll be topping the FIFA Club World Cup betting odds as favorites.

However, with talent, home advantage, and a better soccer culture than ever, maybe the stars will finally align. Who knows? Sport is sport, and sometimes magic happens.
