Pappa Bros Wine Tasting – What Would We Drink?

by David Donalson

Have you ever gone to a restaurant with a good wine list and wondered: “what would the sommelier drink?” Well, we finally got a small view of what the sommelier’s at Pappa Bros. Steakhouse would like to drink. Here was the list for the tasting:

There were some interesting notes on the wines at the tasting. First of all, Grenache was a well represented grape, scoring ¼ of the wines in the tasting (the Rose, Gigondas and the Calatayud). I have to say that I agree with their selection because these were some of the tastiest wines available, especially the Rose and the Gigondas. This was a great way to experience what real rose should taste like. Believe it or not, a pink wine does not have to be sweet! The rose was a wonderful mixture of cherry, strawberry and red apples, mixed with white pepper and herb. It even had a nice minerality carrying through the palate that made it sing. There was zero sweetness in this wine yet it was the big winner for me.  Continue reading

Estaban Vicente at the Meadows

In keeping with the Spanish theme for the next few weeks, we present an exhibition currently at the Meadows Museum at SMU.

Esteban Vicente (American, b. Spain, 1903-2001) arrived in New York about a decade before the movement known as Abstract Expressionism began to coalesce.  Amid American and European émigré artists, Vicente was exposed not only to a gamut of aesthetic philosophies, but also to the spectrum of artistic entourages in New York.   Continue reading

In-N-Out Crowd Speaks Out

by Steven Doyle

photos by Robert Bostick

The city went kooky yesterday as everyone was up in arms with two of the new In-N-Out burger locations opening their doors. We sent a reporter to be on the scene but he was mobbed — then rained on, almost as if Jesus was saying this was not a good thing and we should remember that whole flood issue back in the day. And it looked as if this was a page from that story as the plebs were lined up two-by-two for their chance at the burger-prize of the day.   Continue reading

Veritas Wine Tasting – Bruno Rocca

by David Donalson

photos by Jackee Donalson

While most people were hiding from the storms on Wednesday, I took the opportunity to try some fantastic Italian wine by Bruno Rocca at Veritas Wine Bar in Dallas. Luisa Rocca, daughter of Bruno Rocca was on hand to pour four of the family wines: 2009 Bruno Rocca Dolcetto d’Alba “Trifole”, 2008 Bruno Rocca Barbera d’Alba, 2007 Bruno Rocca Barbaresco and 2007 Bruno Rocca Barbaresco “Rabaja”. If you have not had much in the way of northern Italian wine, this was a great introduction.  Continue reading

Cask of Dreams Rolls Into Dallas

by Crave Staff

Earlier this week we caught up with Glenfiddich Ambassadors Heather Greene, Freddy May as they literally rolled into Dallas. This past weekend the trio of merry Scots escorted an empty barrel that would normally hold gallons of yummy Glenfiddich and asked local residents to sign the oak barrel and list their dream.

One lucky person will be granted their aspirations, be it climbing a particular mountain, cooking with a renowned chef or opening a business.  Continue reading

A Visit with Spain’s Isma Prados

by Steven Doyle

Exciting does not describe the pure thrill of anticipation as we scan the series of events taking place at Central Market over the next few weeks. As we look through the multi-page flyer provided at nearly every check out counter at any of the market’s locations state-wide we get the feeling that Central Market has more than done their homework for the annual event that celebrates a different country each year. What a fantastic primer in geography, culture and cuisine and basically all things Spain.

For a greater appreciation of the event we implored the management of Central Market to allow us face time with some of the imported chefs. There are more than a few Spanish Michelin starred chefs milling about the Dallas Fort Worth area this week preparing for the Espana debut, and we were able to catch up with one of the more charming ones, Chef Isma Prados.    Continue reading

Wednesday May 11th opens the beginning festivities at Central Market’s Espana, a two week celebration that dives head first into Spain’s spirit, language, music, art, architecture and of course food. In the coming weeks you will be able to experience tapas and paella and so much more from some of the grand chefs of the Spanish cuisine movement that has taken flight as some of the greatest cuisine in the world and Michelin stars are passed out like Pez dispensers.  Continue reading
