Why Does Kim Jong Un Hate Austin?

kim jong unby Steven Doyle

Kim Jong Un announced plans to target Austin which has stirred the city of hipsters to question, “why me”. I am sure everyone in North Texas appreciates our brothers and sisters in Austin, and it would be tragic if we missed out on SXSW, a visit to Franklin’s or the nightly flight of bats under the Congress Avenue Bridge.   Continue reading

Big Bend Brewing Company Debuts in Alpine

by Steven Doyle

Last week we enjoyed a bit of respite at the Terlingua chili cook off and ran into a familiar face. Steve Anderson was the brew master for Live Oak Brewing Company in Austin for 11 years and created a name for him and the brewery while creating some fantastic beers. Saturday, when I ran into the brew master, he was pouring a pilsner and a porter, both worthy of the Anderson name. Anderson moved from Austin to Alpine, Texas to spin his magic web at a new brewery called Big Bend Brewing CompanyContinue reading

Joie de Vivre: Uchi is Opening in Dallas

by Robyn Folmar

I was in Austin this weekend for the Texas Monthly BBQ Festival and couldn’t pass up an opportunity to finally try Uchi

The sake apparently went straight to my husband’s head because he insisted on the ten-course Chef’s tasting menu. Normally this tough guy dry heaves at the very thought of eating Aquaman’s sea friends. His principles were quickly jettisoned as we fought over the last raw oyster with honeycrisp apple sorbet and wasabi foam.     Continue reading

Belgian Waffle Company Rolling To A Neighborhood Near You

by Steven Doyle

If you happen to spot the Belgian waffle truck flying around the city, take pause and note that there are real Belgians aboard. And if you thought for one minute that the people of Belgian do not eat their overly stuffed waffles, think again. This isn’t some wacky fairground idea to sell griddled dough stacked with fresh fruits, chocolate and whipped cream. Waffles are part of the daily diet of Belgians near and far according to the Belgian Waffle Company food truck owners  Frank Coucke and Ingrid Gysel.   Continue reading

Fishbone’s “Truth and Soul” and Excluded Middles

by Dr. Spin

Back when I was in high school, desegregation of public schools through busing was still a unilateral practice. Based on my street address, I was bussed across town for three years as a representative of the middle-class, white population from the south side. At the end of my junior year, however, busing was deregulated, and I had the opportunity to attend a local high school for my senior year. The campus was about ten minutes from my house and had a quality band program at the time, so I was more than happy to make this change. Get happier at the Pharmacy…
