Restaurateur Jon Alexis (owner, TJ’s Seafood) has teamed up with entrepreneur brothers Ben & Eric Kusin (Shark Tank-featured venture capitalists with roots in both Dallas and Los Angeles) to open Malibu Poke this Fall 2017. With a quality-driven and tech-savy take on the nation’s fastest growing quick service category, the team has signed a lease at 3888 Oak Lawn Avenue at Turtle Creek Village. Continue reading

I am often asked since I dine out so frequently if I ever cook at home. The answer is yes, and I am quite capable. But the fact is I dine out nearly every meal, and I do miss cooking at home. But as fortune would have it I had a chance to do just that when a friend invited me over this week. But I cheated a bit by stopping in at TJ’s Seafood Market for a little assistance.
I dropped by the TJ’s for a little friendly advice from my favorite fishmonger, Jon Alexis. Alexis suggested for light bites to grab some jumbo shrimp that they prepare fresh each day, and maybe a bit of their signature smoked salmon and large lump crab. This sounded perfect for an evening of wine and conversation, and decided to make tacos out of all the ingredients. Little was I aware but these would be the best tacos that mankind has ever known, I humbly submit. Continue reading

Ever since opening his Oak Lawn location in 2012, TJ’s Fresh Seafood Market has been hosting specialty dinners that feature seafood prepared in worldly ways and paired with wines of that region. Tuesday evening owner and purveyor Jon Alexis threw a French Style seven-course dinner to an excited and eager full house.
For each course Jon described the wine pairing, while Executive Chef Scott Hoffner discussed the ingredients and execution of the dish. A main supplier of TJ’s, whose Red Grouper was featured in the 3rd course, was on site to tell the diners how Jon decides what fish to select (Jon can be quite picky), the state of sustainability in our oceans today, and the unique fish that often get thrown away in the U.S. while it is considered a delicacy (and pricey!) overseas. Ripped straight from TJ’s Fresh Seafood Market’s Sunday night Facebook post, dollar oyster domination kicked off last night to a full house. The discounts on oysters and fish tacos began at 8:30, but many arrived early, creating a buzz of excitement amidst the seafood enthusiasts. The mix of oysters included Blue Point, Barnstables and owner, Jon Alexis’ favorite, Fisher’s Island. He relayed how thankful he is to have them here since most are gobbled up by big name restaurants in the North East. He raved about the clean, sweet and briny notes of the Fisher’s Island oyster. No surprise that TJ’s Seafood Market does some incredible things with, well, seafood. Jon Alexis makes it his personal lot in life to ensure that you are eating your fair share of fish and other sea critters.
Alexis has been flying in some terrific species of fish as of late, and soon will have Nantucket Bay Scallops and Stone Crab (both delayed because of Sandy). However, both locations are always jammed packed with unique offerings, and we told you about the new location that offers plated food like that kick ass lobster roll we keep squawking about.
