Happy Pi Day, Ya’ll

piby Steven Doyle

On March 12, 2009 your lawmakers  passed a non-binding resolution (HRES 224) recognizing March 14, 2009 as National Pi Day. It is one of the more legit holidays we discuss here, and it is actually an homage to geeks everywhere who see the date as a reason to celebrate due to its mathematical implications. We say any reason to celebrate anything is just fine by us.

Since we are predominately about food we will suggest a few places to actually enjoy a pi(e) in Dallas.   Continue reading

Henderson Ave Country Club is Smoking Hot

hacc3by Steven Doyle

Henderson Avenue Country Club seems to have it all. Craft cocktails, creative, savory provisions, live music, and sports are all part of the plan. Reminiscent of Nashville’s Broadway Avenue Honky Tonk’s, the Country Club is upscale, with a bit of sawdust on the floor. The patio, which opens to the venue, giving it a much larger feel, is ideal for watching the comings and goings of Henderson Avenue’s diverse crowds. The venue is located a short walking distance from its popular sister bar, Henderson Tap House, and neighbors Capitol Pub and J. Black’s.

FM Smokehouse is a Taste of Texas

DSC09066by Steven Doyle

What a gem of a restaurant. FM Smokehouse is located in an odd little spot that does extremely well during the week, but draws to a slower pace on weekends when the business crowd flies home. This is actually the case for any of the restaurants in that corridor off 114. What makes FM Smokehouse so particularly wonderful is that, and to my surprise, it is not a BBQ restaurant. Do not get me wrong, I am a fan of very good BBQ. But FM is so much more than brisket and pulled pork, both of which they do very well. Think of FM as indigenous Texas Cuisine, much like you might find at Smoke in West Dallas, or Tim Love’s Smokehouse in Fort Worth.     Continue reading

Smoke’s Plano Location Opens End of December

Restaurateurs Christopher Zielke, Christopher Jeffers and Executive Chef Tim Byres will join the Plano hospitality community the last week of December. The group, who has received national acclaim for their Oak Cliff neighborhood restaurants and bars (SMOKE, Bar Belmont in The Belmont Hotel, Chicken Scratch and The Foundry), will open an extension of SMOKE, their flagship restaurant the last week of December.

The original SMOKE opened in 2009 on the campus of The Belmont Hotel. Located in the Preston Towne Crossing development at the former Snuffer’s Restaurant & Bar location, SMOKE in Plano will initially open for dinner only, Sunday – Thursday 5 p.m. until 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Now finished with summer-long renovations, the 5,800 square-foot building boasts four private dining areas, a heavily-landscaped outdoor patio, a large sit-down bar and an insulated patio off of the main dining room for year-round use. The interior embodies the same atmosphere and vibe of the original, with a small fireplace, campy-yet-nostalgic Texas artwork and raw, reclaimed wood throughout. Diners have a clear view into the kitchen, with nothing separating them from the action but a low countertop, crafted out of maple planking that once served as a roller rink in Seagoville, Texas. Behind the counter is the crown jewel of the restaurant, a 10-foot custom-designed hearth.   Continue reading
