Shinjuku Station is like falling in love and only you know what your heart feels but you cannot do it justice with words, but I will try. The décor is deconstructed and trendy. An exposed brick and narrowed black and white photography filled wall, Japanese characters on curtains dividing the kitchen from the bar, an old wide bench that sits four, about 10 tables set up back to back along the brick wall and a sushi bar for eight or so hugging around the back side of the kitchen. Whether you wait for a bit or are seated as you walk in, begin with an “Overflow of good fortune.” Continue reading

The Second Floor At Marquee To Transition Into Sushi
by Steven Doyle photo by Joey Stewart
Just weeks ago we learned that Marquee chef Tre Wilcox was leaving the restaurant he helped open, and the restaurant hired former Fairmont Hotel chef Andre Natera. Nataera started as chef at the beginning of February and has been doing a fantastic job as top toque, working with Tre’s menu for the time being and putting out some amazing specials that are being trialed for the new menu which should roll out very soon. Even bigger news is what will become of the second floor that the owners announced would be transitioned into a separate restaurant. There has been plenty of speculation. Continue reading

Food Truck Of the Week: Bento Box
by Steven Doyle
I ran across a newish food truck this week, Bento Box. They are primarily a Fort Worth truck, but I found them in Dallas for a special event. The thought of sushi in a food truck, which in the summer can exceed 110 degrees, was at first disarming. When I spoke to the owners, chef Scott Kaiser and his lovely bride Brandi, those thoughts of odd fish quickly went away. Using the term chef generally does not apply to most food truck operators, but in this case it is not only well deserved, it is accurate.

The couple actually have a storied restaurant career and met while both were working at the Cafe Modern located in the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. Scott was cheffing while Brandi worked the front of the house. Continue reading

Japanese Food Porn From Sharaku Sake Lounge
by Steven Doyle photos by Joey Stewart
CraveDFW contributor Joey Stewart prepared this photo essay during a recent visit to Sharaku Sake Lounge, a particularly wonderful izakaya. Consider a izakaya like a Japanese tapas bar which offers sake and small plates like crispy fried morsels called kushiage, grilled skewers called kushiyaki, and shabu-shabu which are meats cooked tableside in steaming pots of broth.
Sharaku has the same owner as one of the very best sushi bars nearly next door, Yutaka Sushi Bistro. Both spots are fresh, contemporary and exemplary. Both are located in a small strip center in the 2600 block of McKinney in Uptown Dallas.
There are plenty of fun dishes to order from the menu while washing them down with bottles of Kirin, or one of the many sakes and custom cocktails. We will let the dishes speak for themselves today as Joey walks us through his dining experience.
