Our Thanksgiving Tradition: Pie From Malai Kitchen

by Steven Doyle

I have always been enamored by the incredible dishes at Malai Kitchen in West Village in Uptown Dallas, but wanted to share what was probably the best part of any of the meals I have had there – the coconut pie.

I loved the pie so very much that we called Malai a few years back and asked for the recipe.  Now we are not normally a recipe loving web site, but this pie is special.  It deserves all the love and attention it can garner.  If you can bake pies, use the recipe.  If you cannot, call them and reserve a pie for your Thanksgiving table. We like to run this recipe every year now in hopes one of you will invite me for a slice!  Continue reading

37th Annual Fort Worth YMCA Turkey Trot Nov 22nd

Fort Worth native, Mayor Betsy Price has been attending the Fort Worth YMCA Turkey Trot since its inception in 1981. Price believes in a community that naturally promotes physical activity throughout the day and the YMCA mission aligns in providing healthy living for all. From turkey and dressing to sweet potatoes and pecan pie, wouldn’t it be nice to work that Thanksgiving dinner off before you take your first bite?
“Fort Worth’s YMCA Turkey Trot is one of my favorite traditions to kick-off the holiday season. In 37 years, I’ve only missed one,” Mayor Price said. Continue reading

Two Buck Pizza Slices For Thanksgiving

Honestly? Thanksgiving is mostly about watching football, stuffing yourself with turkey, having a few drinks, and arguing with your uncle. But often lost in those national pastimes is the actual “giving thanks” part. So GAPCo is getting ahead of the curve, and giving thanks to all of its friends and supporters this Friday.

On November 17, GAPCo is offering $2 two-topping slices at its second (and newest)  location at 1145 Peavy Rd from open until close. That means you’ve got a full day and much of the night to enjoy discounted pizza. Because if there’s anything better than pizza, it’s cheaper-than-usual pizza—ideally with a beer, too, so be sure to order one of those to wash it all down.

GAPCo has been embraced by the East Dallas community, and feels so fortunate to have the support of its regulars and new customers alike. This is just their small way of giving back the best way they know how—with pizza. Everyone’s invited, so mark your calendar, then follow that fresh-baked scent to $2 pizza glory

For its annual holiday tradition, Norma’s Cafe, the original Dallas dining icon serving Texas home cooking for more than 60 years, will open its doors on Thursday, Nov. 23 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for its 29th Free Thanksgiving Dinner. The free meal will be available only at Norma’s Cafe’s original Oak Cliff location on 1123 W. Davis Street in Dallas.

“Our team cannot imagine Thanksgiving Day without sharing it with our community and being a part of a larger movement to spread holiday joy to those in need,” said Ed Murph, owner of Norma’s Cafe. “For the past 29 years, we’ve opened our cafe and provided a home-cooked meal to those who need it, but it would not be possible without our partners and volunteers who share our passion of helping others.” Continue reading

One90 Smoked Meats Your Go-To For Holiday Meals

Before One90 Smoked Meats opened its East Dallas storefront in 2015, the small team of meat enthusiasts had been catering events and selling food at farmers markets. What began as a passion project turned into a business, and founders Kyle St. Clair and Herman Guerra walked away from their law and law enforcement careers, joined forces with two friends, and focused solely on smoking meat for the hungry public. Experience These Pies From Unexpected Sources

pieby Steven Doyle

Have that special holiday party to check out and need to bring a sweet bite to share? We have a fine line-up of freshly made treats from places that you may not have thought of. There are some lovely bakeries in the Dallas area, like Pie Emporium (several locations now), Tart Bakery on Lovers Lane, Rush Patisserie in Oak Cliff, and the beloved Swiss Pastry Shop in Fort Worth all come quickly to mind. But how about a few alternative spots where you won’t necessarily be busted for bringing something purchased that won’t be recognized or even duplicated.   Continue reading
