Cohn Drennan Contemporary Opens With Michael Blair and Angel Fernandez

PicOne

Cohn Drennan Contemporary opens the 2013-2014 season with new works of art from gallery artists Michael Blair and Angel Fernandez.  Michael Blair’s new series of paintings is inspired by some small experimental paint sketches from the last year.  His work continues its commitment to innovating and revisiting modes of abstraction by absorbing his surroundings, taking mental and visual notes all of the time, and then allowing his body and mind to act as a filter for all of the ideas and images swimming around in the ether.  Female and male anatomy is a major source of inspiration in Angel Fernandez’ new sculptures.  The two are combined and abstracted to create suggestive hybrid forms that elude classification, yet the painted forms are simultaneously seductive, playful and imposing.

Michael Blair’s work has been curated into the TX 13 Biennial Group Survey Exhibition that opens September 5, 2013 at the Blue Star Contemporary Museum in San Antonio and runs through November 9, 2013.  A larger representation of his new work will simultaneously be exhibited at the gallery through October 5, 2013.  Michael’s paintings explore materiality and perception, and are heavily focused on the daily rituals and activities of painting that are eventually recorded on canvas.  The creative process itself is the subject matter, made visible through Blair’s interaction with materials in his studio, with the finished painting as a record of that interaction.

Opening Reception September 7, 2013, 6:00 – 8:00pm

Exhibition Dates, June 29 – October 5, 2013
