East Dallas Havana Cafe Expanding

DSC08355by Steven Doyle

Dallas is a bit light on Cuban fare, but Ernesto Velez is doing what he can to change that fact. He is the former owner of Havana Social Club on Victory Plaza which specializes in mojitos and cigars, and for the past two and a half years Velez has been feeding the small masses that line up for lunch and dinner at  Havana Café at 1152 Buckner Blvd. in the Casa Linda Plaza.

At Havana Café you will find authentic Cuban cuisine such as Ropa Vieja, a shredded flank steak simmered in special Havana’s criollo sauce, or Lechon Asado, a marinated pork leg with a Cuban mojo.  And, of course, one of the finest examples of a Cuban Sandwich around made with roast pork leg, Swiss cheese and Serrano ham.  Continue reading

DSC08233by Steven Doyle

When you think of the Free Man in Deep Ellum images of some of the very best in Cajun fare come to mind including their gumbo, jambalaya, red beans and rice and crawfish etouffee. The music is pretty top notch as well, with multiple bands playing each night with absolutely zero cover charge. That leaves more  spending cash for the food and sturdy cocktails.

Last week the Free Man introduced a brunch which is a delightful change of pace from your average Dallas brunch fare.   Continue reading

Carnival Barker Goes Mobile

barkerby Steven Doyle

We shared the very sad news that Carnival Barkers lost their lease at the Truck Yard and will cease operations there in September. Read all about that here. But in the same story owner Aaron Barker stated that he had plans to go mobile with a push cart and will be wielding his way through the eastern section of Dallas. That idea has come to fruition.

Look for Carnival Barkers to make their way through Deep Ellum this weekend with the city approved food cart. For those near Oak Cliff, Barker has his new flagship shop located at  345 West Jefferson. You can still find the tiny shop at the entrance of the Truck Yard still serving until September 14th. It will be a scorching hot weekend and hand churned ice cream awaits!
