One of San Antonio’s most famous taco spots is preparing to close its doors for good. After serving the city’s Southwest Side since 1962, Oscar’s Taco House will shut down permanently this summer to make way for a new city bridge. This is one of the best restaurants for the famed puffy taco.
Fans of the iconic restaurant still have a little over a month to stop by for one last plate of puffy tacos—their final day of service is June 28.

“The city bought us. They’ve been saying for five or ten years that they wanted to build a bridge,” Pruneda said.
The restaurant’s closure comes as part of the South Zarzamora Street Overpass at Union Pacific Railroad project—a major construction effort under the City of San Antonio’s 2022–2027 Bond Program. The multi-phase project is aimed at improving traffic flow and safety in the area.
Oscar’s Taco House has deep roots in the community. It began in the early 1960s as a simple ice house, opened by Rick and Steve Garcia’s father, where local kids gathered after school to grab sodas and hang out. Eventually, he expanded the business into a full taco house—one that grew to become a nostalgic favorite for generations of San Antonians.
Many of the kids who once sat at its tables now return with their grandchildren, reliving old memories over a meal.
With just weeks left until it closes, long-time patrons and new visitors alike are encouraged to enjoy one last visit to this iconic local eatery before it becomes part of San Antonio history.
