In eyesight of Terrell, Texas, Ham Orchards is more than just a peach farm—it’s a seasonal ritual, a family outing, and a local institution rolled into one. From mid-May through mid-August, the orchard invites visitors to wander rows of peach trees under the Texas sun, handpicking plump fruit that practically falls into your palm.
The process is simple. Upon arrival, guests check in at the front stand, receive baskets or boxes, and are directed to the day’s designated picking rows. Staff members are on hand to explain the best way to choose ripe peaches: look for the deep yellow-gold undertone, not just the rosy blush. Pick gently—twisting the fruit at the stem rather than pulling—and you’ll be rewarded with firm, fragrant peaches ready to eat fresh, bake into cobblers, or can for later.

But Ham Orchards isn’t just about peach season. Even outside of picking hours, the farm store and surrounding grounds are bustling with activity. Inside the open-air market, rows of jams, jellies, sauces, and produce fill wooden shelves—many made from the orchard’s own harvests. A separate section of the store houses a bakery turning out seasonal pies, fried peach hand pies, and towering soft-serve cones with signature peach swirl, a must on sweltering summer afternoons.
Adjacent to the market is a covered patio with picnic tables, where visitors dig into offerings from the onsite barbecue stand, Eddie Deen BBQ. Smoked brisket sandwiches, ribs, and sausage links are piled onto trays, often accompanied by sides like peach baked beans or coleslaw made with orchard apples. The scent of hickory smoke mingles with sweet fruit in the air, creating a scene that’s unmistakably Texan and wholly Ham Orchards.
Though the peaches are the seasonal stars, the orchard’s operation stretches year-round. In cooler months, they shift focus to apples, pecans, and preserves. Gift boxes are assembled for the holidays, and the market continues to draw regulars who come for everything from fresh produce to peach salsa and smoked jalapeño jelly. The orchard’s reputation has grown steadily over its four decades of operation, but the pace and feel remain refreshingly local.
Ham Orchards delivers a slice of rural life just 40 minutes from Dallas, but there’s nothing staged or nostalgic here—just ripe fruit, honest food, and a working farm that opens its gates wide.
