Inside the Underground Listening Bar That’s Quietly Changing Dallas Nightlife

Shyboy Hi-Fi has been open for two months and it’s already doing something Dallas nightlife hasn’t seen before. The venue sits underground at 1313 Main Street in the former bank vaults of The Drakestone — nine-foot OJAS speakers, acoustics tuned by the same specialist who worked on installations at the San Francisco MoMA, cocktails starting at $13, soft-serve ice cream at the bar. The idea came from Tokyo’s postwar jazz kissas, the intimate cafés where people gathered to sit down, close their eyes, and actually listen. Headington Companies built their version of that beneath downtown Dallas and May is when the calendar really opens up.

The month’s biggest night is probably May 8, when house music legend Louie Vega plays alongside JT Donaldson and Brandon Epocha. Vega has been at the center of dance music culture for four decades — his influence on house, Latin, and soul runs deep enough that any serious music fan knows the name. He doesn’t come to Dallas often. May 13 brings Mark Farina for a Mushroom Jazz night — the downtempo-meets-hip-hop-meets-house blend he’s been refining since the ’90s, the kind of set that rewards actual listening rather than just dancing.

Chicago’s DJ Heather plays May 15 in what the venue is calling a rare Dallas appearance. The following night, DJ Spinna leads a Stevie Wonder-focused edition of Shyboy’s ongoing Sound Advice series at 6 p.m. before taking over the decks for a full evening set — two different experiences in one night, both worth catching. Sound Advice runs throughout the month as an early-evening format where each artist does a deep dive into the records and influences behind their sound. It’s a different kind of music conversation, and Shyboy has built it into a recurring series.

May 20 steps outside the DJ format entirely. Adrian Quesada of Black Pumas plays a live set pulling from psychedelic soul and global influences — a different kind of night for the room and one of the more unusual bookings of the month. Then on May 22, Berlin’s Tama Sumo and Lakuti, both residents of Panorama Bar, bring a sound that’s internationally respected and rarely heard in Texas. That one will sell out.

The rest of the month fills out with a strong mix of touring talent and Dallas locals: Eli Escobar, Cosmo Baker, Coflo, Malik Abdul-Rahmaan, and JT Donaldson appear multiple times throughout. The May 30 Contour night with Sober closes the month on a community note — a recurring night that has built its own following inside the venue.

Most nights are first-come, first-served with no cover. Shyboy is open Wednesday and Sunday 6 p.m. to midnight, Thursday through Saturday 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. Full calendar and tickets at shyboyhifi.com and @shyboy.hifi.
