The Best Gas Station Restaurant in America Is Rolling Sushi Outside Ennis

Some of the most talked-about sushi in North Texas is coming out of a gas station on a farm road south of Ennis.

Bristol General Store, at 5710 FM 660 in the tiny community of Bristol, was just named the No. 1 gas station restaurant in America by the car rental company SIXT. It topped a national list of 20. The ranking weighed TikTok views for 70 percent of each score and Google ratings for the rest. Bristol came out on top with a 4.7 rating and more than 380,000 views, edging out Billeaud’s Meat & Grocery in Broussard, Louisiana.

Co-owner Jennifer Keathly has put it simply: they’re a gas station that sells sushi, and she’ll tell you it’s the best you can find.

The sushi has been there about 20 years. It started with a couple from South Korea who wanted to open a sushi restaurant in Collin County but couldn’t afford it. They could get a loan for a rural general store, though, so they bought this one and put a sushi counter inside. For more than 15 years, word spread one roll at a time.

When that couple retired, the store went to two of their customers. Jennifer and Eric Keathly were real estate agents who lived nearby and had been eating there for years. They bought it about four years ago and kept the original recipes. Then they added more American food and a bakery.

The sushi is rolled to order, and nothing sits waiting in a cooler. The menu covers nigiri, sashimi, and dozens of fresh and fried rolls. The same counter also turns out burgers and chili fries, so a family with one sushi fan and two picky kids can all eat at the same table. Bristol is home to about 750 people, and Jennifer says the store draws customers from across North Texas and beyond, and the Keathlys see it as a gathering place for their neighbors as much as a business.

“We are incredibly proud to represent our little town on a national stage,” Eric said when the ranking came out.

Bristol General Store is open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. The phone number is 972-666-2400.

Dallas made the list too. At No. 6 is John’s Backyard Grill, a burger and taco counter at 17604 Davenport Road in Far North Dallas, open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Other Texas spots in the top 20 were Flamin Burger in Kyle at No. 14 and the Czech Stop in West, the kolache stop every I-35 driver knows, at No. 15.

Any ranking built mostly on TikTok views should be taken with a grain of salt. Still, the fresh fish behind a cash register 28 miles south of Dallas is real.
