Texas Travel: 12 Odd Bucket List Destinations

Texas is a state that refuses to be normal, and its strangest corners are often the most unforgettable. Forget the Alamo or the Hill Country wineries for a minute — if you really want a story to tell, you need the weird, the whimsical, and the downright bizarre. Texas Travel suggests a start in Amarillo with Cadillac Ranch, where ten vintage cars are buried nose-first in the dirt like some kind of desert monument to excess. Don’t just drive by — grab a spray can, leave your mark, and feel the thrill of being part of a constantly evolving roadside masterpiece. A little westward whimsy can be found in Bandera, where cowboy culture meets prickly pear mania. Cactus candy, prickly pear jelly, and even margaritas await you, proving Texas knows how to turn the desert into dessert.

Long Texas Weekend Winter Get-a-Way Vacations

Winter in Texas is a season of quiet discoveries, where the Lone Star State sheds its summer crowds and reveals hidden corners perfect for a long weekend escape. From the rolling hills of Hill Country to the breezy shores of the Gulf Coast, there are destinations where cozy lodging, local flavors, and scenic adventures combine to create a travel experience that feels both indulgent and restorative. These escapes are as much about the meals you share as the places you explore. Imagine savoring schnitzel and spaetzle in Fredericksburg, tasting brisket and pit-cooked pork in Llano, or enjoying oysters and Gulf fish in Rockport—all while staying in boutique inns, riverside cabins, or charming historic hotels. A True Gem, El Pocito in McAllen, TX

Located in a quiet alley between South 16th and 17th Streets in McAllen, Texas, lies a culinary gem known as El Pocito. This unassuming establishment, officially named The Tortilleria Factory, has been delighting taste buds for over a century. Worth a long journey for lunch? We think so.

El Pocito’s story begins in 1935, founded by Aurelio Balli Tijerina and Herminia Gonzalez Balli. The couple’s dedication to authentic Mexican cuisine led them to establish a tortilla factory that would become a cornerstone of the community. The name “El Pocito,” meaning “the little well,” evokes images of a humble wellspring—a fitting metaphor for the rich flavors and traditions flowing from this establishment.

Texas Czech Stop: The Heart of Kolache Country

In the small town of West, Texas, the Czech Stop is more than just a roadside bakery — it’s a delicious destination, a cultural institution, and a legend among those who’ve cruised I-35 between Dallas and Austin. If you’ve ever wondered what makes kolaches worth pulling off the highway for, this is your stop (and yes, they’re worth it).

Kolaches, soft, pillowy pastries filled with sweet or savory delights, are the edible love child of Czech immigrants and Texas hospitality. When the Czechs settled in Texas in the 19th century, they brought their recipes for these flavorful treats. Over the years, the pastries were embraced and adapted by Texans, leading to the savory spin-offs like sausage-filled klobasniky (yes, technically not kolaches, but we’ll let it slide for now).
