Sauce’d in Grapevine Makes One of the Best Burgers in DFW

Sauce’d opened on Grapevine’s Main Street in 2019 as a pizzeria. Three years later the family that runs it added smashburgers, and the little shop has been arguing with itself ever since. The restaurant calls itself a burger joint that moonlights as a pizzeria, then corrects itself and says it’s the other way around.

After eating there, CraveDFW can settle at least part of the debate. The smashburger at Sauce’d is truly one of the best burgers in DFW.

The build is simple, which is why it works. Two 4-ounce patties of Texas beef go onto the flattop and get smashed thin with onion, so the meat and onion cook together into one crusty, savory layer. Each one comes with chips, or with the house fries for a little more. Those fries are tossed in a family recipe seasoning, and the basket is big enough to share, though you may not want to.

The Classic keeps it to American cheese and Dad’s Burger Sauce, the house sauce that turns up on nearly every burger on the board. From there the menu branches out. The Jalapeño Jack brings pepper jack and grilled jalapeños. Swiss & Shrooms does exactly what it says. The OG stacks pepper jack, lettuce, pickle, tomato and bacon, and the Bourbon Jam adds a bacon jam made with Bulleit bourbon.

The one to order if you’re only coming once is the Texas Wagyu Smashburger. It’s two patties of 100% Texas Wagyu with American cheese, onion, Best Maid pickles and Dad’s sauce on a grilled Hawaiian bun. The pickles are a nice Texas touch, and the sweet bun plays against the salty beef the way it should.

None of this means you skip the pizza. Sauce’d built its name on pies, and the kitchen takes them seriously. The dough rests for 72 hours, the mozzarella is shredded in house, and the sauces are made from scratch. You can go New York style, or Texas style, with an oversized crust edge finished in garlic butter.

The Brooklyn is the house showpiece, with crisp-edged pepperoni, whipped hot honey ricotta and fresh basil. The Bee Sting goes hot and sweet with soppressata, fresh jalapeño and Mike’s Hot Honey. If you’re in at lunch, New York slices are sold by the slice until they run out, which makes a burger-and-a-slice lunch very easy to justify.

One pie on the menu deserves a mention of its own. Uncle Brad’s Pie is a straightforward double pepperoni and double mushroom, and every dollar it brings in goes toward finding a cure for ALS. Order it once and you’ve done something good along with your dinner.

The heart of the place is right there on its own website. Sauce’d has been family owned and family run since the first day, and the owners say they went through nearly six kitchen remodels before they felt close to where they wanted to be. That kind of stubbornness shows up on the plate. There’s also a Sauce’d food truck working out of Northlake for anyone farther west.

It’s a casual, come-as-you-are spot with a cold beer list to go with the food. Grapevine’s Main Street has more than its share of places built for tourists. This one feels built for the people who live there, and the burger is worth the drive from anywhere in the Metroplex.

Sauce’d is at 110 N. Main St. in Grapevine. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday.
