The origins of Mexican Independence Day trace back to September 16, 1810, when Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a Roman Catholic priest, issued a call to arms against Spanish rule in the town of Dolores (now Dolores Hidalgo) in the state of Guanajuato. This event is known as “El Grito de Dolores,” which translates to “The Cry of Dolores.” Hidalgo’s call marked the start of the Mexican War of Independence.
