Lockhart, TX Gains a Piece of Texas BBQ History

Authentic Texas hospitality and barbecue has made its way back to its roots in Lockhart by way of the Black family – Terry, Patti, Christina, Mike and Mark. Nestled on 900 North Colorado Street, Terry Black’s Barbecue brings brisket, beef ribs, and ice-cold beer as they welcome their third location opening.

“Lockhart was designated the barbecue capital of Texas by the Texas State legislature, so it’s been a dream to come back home and open a Terry Black’s barbecue location there,” said Mike Black. “We’re excited to get back to where it all began for our family and give the community some amazing barbecue.”

The pit features six 1,000-gallon offset smokers where the focus is on the quality of the meats and the old-school style of smoking. Terry Black’s menu is simple and timeless. Guests can choose from an array of mouthwatering meats by the pound. Options like sliced brisket, beef ribs, turkey, pork ribs, chopped beef, or sausage can be served as a sandwich or a la carte. Sides, served cafeteria-style, include baked potato salad, cole slaw, mac-n-cheese, cream corn, pinto beans, green beans, and Mexican rice. And, if you still have room for dessert, pick up an order of peach cobbler, banana pudding, or the Texan-classic, mini pecan pie.

In 2014 Mike and his brother Mark Black opened the first Terry Black’s Barbecue in Austin, Texas, and in 2019, their second location in Dallas, Texas. After years of success in Austin and Dallas and earning the title of one of Texas Monthly’s Top 50 BBQ restaurants in the state, the brothers decided to bring their family’s barbecue legacy back to their hometown of Lockhart. The Black family’s ties to Lockhart are deep-rooted in the town’s history of serving barbecue. Their cooking techniques trace back 90 years. You can taste how much soul they put into their dining experience.

“I think the thing that really sets our family apart is that we take pride in every product we put out there. We have such a passion for what we do, and it’s exciting to see the Lockhart community welcome us with open arms,” said Mark Black.  “You don’t come in here and get a set plate of food. You can order a slice of brisket, a rib, and a sausage link all at once to get a taste of each unique menu item, perfected after several hours of smoking and preparation.”

Stop by Terry Black’s Barbecue to tour the smokehouse, order a pound – or two – of smoked meat, sip on their iconic Black’s Margarita, and see what true central Texas barbecue is all about. Terry Black’s Barbecue Lockhart is located at 900 North Colorado Street, Lockhart, TX 78644. The restaurant is open seven days a week, Sunday – Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
