The Old Monk is a charming pub that brings a slice of European culture to the Lone Star State. Founded by Feargal McKinney, a native of Dublin, Ireland, the establishment reflects his love for food and community. After a journey that took him from the streets of New York City to California, Feargal found himself captivated by Dallas, where he decided to plant roots and share his passion for authentic pub fare.
Feargal McKinney has established himself as a prominent figure in Dallas’s dining scene. He is the proud owner of several beloved establishments, including The Old Monk, Blackfriar Pub, and now defunct Renfield’s Corner and Idle Rich. Each venue showcases his passion for authentic food and drink, offering unique atmospheres that reflect his Irish heritage while catering to the diverse tastes of the community.
McKinney has current plans to open two more establishments. The first bar is The Old Monk, a beloved pub that originally opened on Henderson Avenue in Dallas. With its upcoming expansion to Oak Cliff in October 2024, this marks the pub’s first growth in its impressive 25-year history. Next door to The Old Monk, Kilmac’s is set to be a cozy watering hole featuring a spacious backyard, slated to open in 2025. Together, these two establishments promise to enhance the vibrant Oak Cliff neighborhood.
At The Old Monk, the menu is a delightful homage to traditional European dishes, beginning with an impressive selection of cheese and charcuterie. Guests can savor the rich flavors of Red Leicester and Whiskey Cheddar alongside creamy Brie, complemented by artisanal meats such as Hot Coppa and Gypsy Salami. This curated board offers a perfect introduction to the pub’s dedication to high-quality ingredients and authentic taste.

For those seeking a classic pub experience, the Welsh Rarebit is a standout dish. This traditional Welsh delicacy features a rich, savory cheese sauce served over toasted bread, making it a comforting choice for any time of day. Pair it with the Fish and Chips, where Atlantic cod is expertly battered in Smithwick’s ale, resulting in a crispy, golden exterior. Served with steak-cut fries, malt vinegar, and homemade tartar sauce, it encapsulates the essence of British comfort food.
The German Plate is another must-try, featuring grilled bratwurst and knockwurst, accompanied by tangy red kraut and hearty German potato salad. Each bite transports diners to a rustic beer garden, where the spirit of camaraderie thrives over shared plates and pints.
For seafood lovers, the Belgian Style Steamed Mussels are a house specialty, steamed in Hoegaarden Belgian white ale with shallots, celery, garlic, and herbs. This dish comes with a side of crusty bread, perfect for soaking up the aromatic broth—a true testament to the pub’s commitment to authentic flavors.
The Old Monk also boasts a selection of hearty sandwiches, including the Monk Burger, a half-pound patty topped with caramelized onions, bacon, and Welsh Rarebit, all nestled in a fresh bun with lettuce, tomato, and mayo. It’s a flavor-packed indulgence that embodies Feargal’s vision of pub food with a gourmet twist.

Another popular option is the Pistachio Fried Chicken Sandwich, featuring a buttermilk-dipped chicken breast, deep-fried to perfection with a crunchy pistachio crust. Served with crisp lettuce, ripe tomato, red onion, and a side of cider barbecue sauce, it’s a modern take on a classic favorite that keeps patrons coming back for more.
In a city where culinary diversity flourishes, The Old Monk stands out as a beloved spot for both locals and visitors. Feargal McKinney has created not just a restaurant, but a gathering place where the spirit of European pub culture thrives, and every dish tells a story of tradition, quality, and a deep love for food. Whether you’re there for a leisurely meal or a night out with friends, The Old Monk promises an experience that resonates long after the last bite.
