Texas Rodeo Season Is Approaching: Here’s Where to Stay

Rodeo season in Texas is not a single event—it’s a statewide rhythm that stretches from late winter into early spring, rooted in agriculture, competition, and community pride. While each city puts its own stamp on the tradition, the common thread is scale: massive arenas, nationally ranked competitors, chart-topping concert lineups, and crowds that turn rodeo weeks into something closer to a civic festival than a sporting event.

In Houston, the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo is the largest of its kind in the world, blending elite rodeo competition with a star-powered concert series, sprawling barbecue cook-offs, and educational livestock exhibitions. It’s a citywide affair where business meetings happen in boots, and evenings stretch late with post-rodeo dinners, after-parties, and rooftop gatherings. Rodeo here is big, bold, and unapologetically modern—just like the city itself.

San Antonio’s rodeo culture carries a slightly different tone, shaped by its deep Mexican and Tejano heritage and its historic downtown setting. The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo weaves Western sport with mariachi, Tex-Mex flavors, and River Walk energy, creating a more immersive, walkable experience. Days often begin with livestock shows and competitions and end along the river with cocktails, live music, and late-night celebrations. It’s tradition, yes—but with a sense of place that feels distinctly San Antonio.

Thompson Houston | Houston, TX

In the heart of downtown, Thompson Houston offers a contemporary counterpoint to the grit and grandeur of rodeo season. With panoramic skyline views, a one-acre rooftop complete with an infinity pool and cabanas, destination dining, and the full-service Thompson Spa, the hotel serves as a refined home base during the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo in March.

To mark the season, Thompson Houston is rolling out dedicated rodeo programming, including rodeo-inspired spa treatments and a high-style rooftop activation in partnership with 818 Tequila, founded by Kendall Jenner. Inspired by the brand’s annual Stagecoach Outpost, the 818 Rodeo pop-up transforms the hotel’s rooftop greenspace into a Western-themed social hub. Guests can enjoy specialty rodeo cocktails like Ranch Waters and margaritas, alongside lawn games, themed merchandise, and laid-back pre-rodeo energy. The pop-up runs March 14–15 and March 20–21, from 1–4 p.m., offering a polished alternative to traditional tailgating without losing the spirit of the season.

Thompson San Antonio – Riverwalk | San Antonio, TX

Along the iconic River Walk, Thompson San Antonio delivers a distinctly urban take on rodeo season—where Western tradition meets rooftop glamour. From February 16 through March 7, the hotel’s signature rooftop lounge, The Moon’s Daughters, transforms into “Moon’s Saloon,” a rodeo-themed pop-up overlooking the city.

The limited-time menu leans indulgent and playful, featuring speck-wrapped jalapeño peppers stuffed with Dapper Goat cheese, house-made potato chips with paddlefish caviar and tzatziki, a dramatic seared bone-in ribeye with duck fat marble potato confit, and $15 Rodeo Ranch Waters made with brand tequila. The experience pairs elevated dining with sweeping views and a festive, unmistakably San Antonio atmosphere.

Rodeo season celebrations kick off with an official event on February 18, followed by the hotel’s five-year anniversary celebration from February 19–23. Guests can expect lobby photo moments, welcome cocktails at check-in, surprise-and-delight touches throughout the stay, and live music on February 20 and 21, cementing Thompson San Antonio as a standout destination for rodeo-goers who want tradition served with style.

Across Texas, rodeo season remains a powerful expression of heritage—but at Thompson Houston and Thompson San Antonio, it’s also an invitation to experience the spectacle from a more refined vantage point. From arena lights to rooftop cocktails, these stays place guests squarely in the middle of the action, proving that rodeo season can be both rugged and remarkably well-appointed.
