The Zodiac Room opened on the sixth floor of the downtown Neiman Marcus flagship in April 1953, designed by New York decorator Eleanor LeMaire around a celestial theme, with signs of the zodiac worked into both the main dining room and the terrace. Stanley Marcus wanted a restaurant that would give out-of-town shoppers a reason to stay downtown longer, and for more than seven decades it did exactly that. On September 30, when the downtown store closes for good, the room closes with it. It’s a room CraveDFW has written about before, back when its future still seemed settled.
What actually built the Zodiac Room’s reputation wasn’t the décor. It was Helen Corbitt, the chef who ran the kitchen for decades and turned what could have been a department store lunch counter into something people planned their day around. Her chicken consommé, served in a small cup before the meal, and her popovers with strawberry butter became a ritual diners still talk about the way they’d describe a family recipe. Her mandarin orange soufflé and Stanley’s Pot Roast, named for Marcus himself, stayed on the menu for generations after she stopped cooking them herself.
The closure has been a long time coming, and not always a straight line. Neiman Marcus first floated closing the downtown store outright in early 2025, which set off a run on reservations from Dallas natives trying to get one last popover in before the doors shut. Weeks later, the company reversed course, announcing it would explore a full reimagining of the building alongside the City of Dallas instead, with both the Zodiac Room and the store’s bridal salon staying open through that process. Saks Global CEO Marc Metrick said the goal was to let the downtown building and the NorthPark store serve different purposes for Dallas shoppers going forward, rather than closing one to prop up the other.
That runway ran out this summer. Neiman Marcus, which was founded in Dallas and acquired by Saks Global in 2024, confirmed the downtown store’s final day will be September 30, in a letter sent directly to customers. The announcement landed the same week the Dallas Mavericks confirmed their own departure from downtown for a new arena site in far north Dallas, making it a rough stretch for the neighborhood’s list of longtime anchors.
The company’s letter made clear this isn’t the end of the Zodiac Room itself, though. Neiman Marcus plans to fold pieces of the downtown store’s history into its NorthPark location, and that includes reimagining the NorthPark Café into a new version of the Zodiac Room, along with continuing to serve brides transferring from the downtown bridal salon.
Whether that means Corbitt’s actual recipes make the move, or just the name and the idea of the place, hasn’t been spelled out yet. For a restaurant that has already survived one false closure and reversed course once before, it’s a reasonable bet that the popovers aren’t gone for good. They’re just changing addresses, from Main Street to NorthPark.
