Sundown at Granada Serves Its Last Meal Sunday, Here’s How to Say Goodbye

If Sundown at Granada is one of your places, you have until Sunday.

Sundown, the restaurant next door to the Granada Theater on Lower Greenville, will serve its last day of regular restaurant service on Sunday, November 1. Owners Mike Schoder and Julia Garton announced on October 23 that they have sold both Sundown and the Granada Theater to Bathhouse, a New York-based wellness and spa brand. Sundown will keep hosting private events through December 31. The Granada will keep the music going a little longer, with shows and events through April 17, 2027.

It’s hard to picture Lower Greenville without them. The Granada opened as a movie house in 1946, and Schoder brought it back as a full-time music venue in 2004. He has been a fixture on the street even longer, since opening the CD World record store there in 1992. Sundown came along next door more than a decade ago and gave concertgoers, and plenty of people with no show tickets at all, a real place to eat and drink.

In their announcement, the owners were candid about why. They pointed to rising costs, shifting audiences and corporate consolidation, which have made life harder and harder for independent music venues. It was also personal. Schoder, who is 58, wrote about losing too many friends in the music business in their 40s and 50s, and about how that changed the way he thinks about time and how much of life goes to work. It reads less like a business announcement than a goodbye from two people who gave that corner of Greenville a lot of years.

So if you’re going to go, go this weekend. Ask for the rooftop, which looks down Greenville and was always the best seat in the house. Order the Sundown Benedict, with barbecue brisket, a poached egg and hollandaise on a brioche slider, or the Wake-Up Brisket tacos, and get the loaded waffle fries for the table. When we wrote about brunch at Sundown just this September, those were the dishes that made the case for the place. Sundown also ran dedicated gluten-free fryers, something few restaurants bother with, and diners with celiac noticed.

For its final weekend, Sundown is scheduled to be open Friday from 11 a.m. to midnight, Saturday from 10 a.m. to midnight and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. It’s at 3520 Greenville Ave., and the number is 214-823-8305. Expect a crowd. A lot of Dallas is going to want one more round on that roof.

The Granada still has shows on the calendar into April, so there’s time to see one more concert there. But Sunday is the last chance to sit down at Sundown, and that deserves a toast.
