Know Your Pecan Pie and Where to Find the Good Ones

Pecan pie has been the official State Pie of Texas since 2013, when the Legislature passed a resolution saying no dish says “Texas” more sweetly. It took a while. The Texas Siftings humor paper was already calling pecan pie worthy of being a “real state pie” back in 1886, and the pecan has been the state tree since 1919.

Thanksgiving is three weeks out, and the good pies go fast. Here are four places in DFW to order one now.

Emporium Pie – Drunken Nut
Humble Pies

Emporium Pies makes what may be the most famous pecan pie in North Texas. The Drunken Nut starts with a shortbread crust and fills it with butter, bourbon, brown sugar and Texas pecans, with no corn syrup at all. The shortbread gives it a crumbly, cookie-like base that sets it apart from the classic. It’s on the menu year-round, and Thanksgiving preorders are open online for pickup at the Bishop Arts, Deep Ellum, McKinney and Fort Worth shops. Emporium also ships nationwide if you have family out of state.

Humble: Simply Good Pies, Sean and Erin Jett’s shop on Garland Road near White Rock Lake, has bragging rights this year. Its Sweet Potato Bourbon Pecan was named the best sweet potato pie in the country at the 2026 American Pie Council National Championships. It’s a South Louisiana idea, sweet potato custard topped with a layer of bourbon pecan filling, and it ends the oldest argument at the Thanksgiving table because you no longer have to choose. Thanksgiving orders are open through November 20 for pickup at 9014 Garland Road.

JudyPie on Grapevine’s Main Street is the place for anyone who can’t decide on just one pecan pie. Judy’s Thanksgiving menu offers four versions under the Rhoda’s name: classic pecan, chocolate pecan, bourbon pecan and chocolate bourbon pecan. Holiday pies come in 6-inch and 10-inch sizes for pickup November 23, 24 and 25 at 520 S. Main St., and the shop’s two-pie preorder special ends November 8, so move fast on that one.

Ranch at Las Colinas

The Ranch at Las Colinas in Irving turns its pecan pie into a full-blown Texas dessert. The Route 66 Pecan Pie is piled high with local pecans on a cinnamon roll crust and finished with a Balcones Texas Whiskey caramel sauce. Whole pies feed up to 12, and minis come five to a sleeve, which makes them an easy hostess gift. Call ahead to order for pickup at 857 W. John Carpenter Freeway.

Order early, pick up early, and save room.
