2012 Dive Bar Tour Rolls Through Dallas

by Steven Doyle     photos by Robert Bostick

Planning the latest Dallas Bus Tour was a blast. Previous editions included tours that explored Tacos, Pizza, Burgers, and even vegan food in Dallas. The trick behind a successful tour I am finding is not to over think the process. Load up 25 adults onto a bus full of beer, wine and cocktails and point them in any direction and they will have fun.

Such is the case for the latest tour which explored dive bars of Dallas. Now here might be the rub for some, what exactly is a dive bar? I have my definition, you have yours. However, for the first tour exploring almost only alcohol I wanted to play it safe. No stabbings, no arrests, no crying.            Continue reading

Holiday Burlesque Tonight at Trees

by Courtney Crush

The holidays have long been cursed with the drudge of traditions that don’t always escalate the spirits. Let’s face it. “The Nutcracker” is several hours of yawn with an intermission fit for coffee zapped with a double shot in hopes of not interrupting the second act with snores from the mezzanine. A second act? It’s not over yet? Blech! That isn’t to say that occasionally a tear of nostalgia doesn’t spring to the mind’s eye every now and then.

Ballet is an exceptional art form of beauty and poise. Nonetheless, by the caffeine infused second act, my eyes have fuzzed over and I’m recreating the storyline with more drama and less clothes. A sprinkle of sugar and spice goes a long way to kindle enthusiasm. What if “The Nutcracker” was performed in the tradition of burlesque? Now that’s a show I could stay awake for.  Continue reading

Shop, Wine and Dine This Weekend

by Steven Doyle

We have a few shout outs for the weekend and think you might enjoy a few of these.  There are a few things going on that you might enjoy.

First let us mention that we saw Miguel Vicéns and John Paul Valverde owners of Campo Modern Country Bistro  last night and they wanted to let everyone know they do indeed have a liquor license. There were just a few days in the beginning that they did not have one, but now you can enjoy the cocktail program designed by Brad Hensarling of Fort Worth’s The Usual at the new Oak Cliff restaurant.

Saturday you can start your Christmas shopping by purchasing wares from local artisans at the Dallas Flea, the occasional market located in the Southside of Lamar at 1409 S. Lamar. Here you will find amazing clothing, jewelry, food and vintage wear all under one room and made by some super cool locals.   Continue reading

Jake’s at the New FW Food Park

by Steven Doyle

Jake’s has been on the Dallas burger scene since 1985, and they have been fairly busy lately.  Jake’s only recently celebrated their grand opening on Henderson with a completely new building being raised, and now they are part of the food truck culture as they join Fort Worth today at the grand opening of the Food Truck Park.

The Food Park opens tonight at 6pm with plenty of fanfare including free beer from Rahr Brewing. Other trucks expected to be at the opening include Good Karma Kitchen, YES! Taco, Nammi Truck, Lee’s Grilled Cheeses and Red Jett Sweets.   Continue reading

Make-A-Wish Truffle Dinner

by Steven Doyle

Last evening we were invited guests at a very special white truffle dinner hosted by the Make-a-Wish Foundation at La Fiorentina. The night promised a magical meal prepared by the chefs at the Lombardi family restaurant, but the evening was more about children that could not be with us that evening.

You are no doubt familiar with the legendary organization, Make-a-Wish. Over the years they have fulfilled thousands of dreams (215,139 to date) of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Each wish costs an average of $7,000 and last night they raised at least that much in a live auction, proceeds from the dinner, and a very generous donation by the Lombardi family.   Continue reading
