
The cheesesteak, a beloved American sandwich, originated in Philadelphia in the 1930s. Pat Olivieri, a hot dog vendor, is credited with its invention. One day, he decided to grill some beef from the butcher and put it on an Italian roll. A passing cab driver, intrigued by the aroma, asked for one. Soon, word spread, and the cheesesteak became a local sensation.
Pat’s King of Steaks opened in 1930, becoming a Philadelphia institution. The addition of cheese came later, with provolone initially being the popular choice before Cheez Whiz became the standard topping in the 1950s. Today, the cheesesteak is a symbol of Philadelphia’s rich culinary heritage, celebrated nationwide.
