Robyn Checks Out The New Meso Maya

One of the perks of climate change in Texas is dining outdoors on a ridiculously sunny winter’s day. Thankfully, Dallas has another stellar patio to enjoy a margarita this toasty February.

Steps away from the new Perot Museum of Nature and Science, Meso Maya aims to break through the Tex-Mex clutter by offering its take on authentic interior Mexican food. If you haven’t already eaten at their other location on Preston & Forest, the restaurant pays homage to the expansive Latin American culture by focusing on roasted chiles, tomatillos, white cheese and moles. They steer clear of the ubiquitous “brown & orange” palette we know and love in Texas.  


The Sopa De Lima/chicken soup was light with just enough queso Chihuahua to complement the vegetables. As we progressed through the meal it was nice to actually taste the main course without fishing the meat out of sea of sauce and cheese.

The Cochinita Pibil is one of the most popular dishes and is marinated for 24 hours in achiote and served against a white rice and black beans backdrop. The Kobe Barbacoa was the standout as it was fork tender and paired well with the minced onion and gold potatoes.




The courtyard patio is incredibly inviting and due to the high brick walls, only two tables receive direct sunlight during the day. This is the perfect spot to enjoy the spicy Serrano Berry Margarita (heavy on the serrano, please) and brisket chicharrones (Yes. Let that sink in).  We tried the Herradura Suprema tequila and it was an excellent way to end the meal. Or start it. Or clean your palate mid-course a few times. They serve the “cheapest” shot of the mind-blowing tequila, Casa Dragones, that I have found.  At $40 a serving you can roll like Dolomite in the historic courtyard.

It’s easy to get your swagger back at Meso Maya – it’s friendly, tasty and all wrapped up in killer atmosphere.
