Tired of the noise and traffic in Uptown? Maybe you should move.
Here is my list of areas to live 10-15 minutes away from Downtown Dallas.
Neighborhoods that “Get It”
Deep Ellum-Farmers Market You are a 2-10 minute Uber away from Downtown, Trinity Groves, Design District, Bishop Arts, Uptown, Greenville Avenue, and Knox-Henderson. Walking distance are One Arts Plaza, and The Majestic Theatre. Close by are tons of local live musical acts, Bloody Mary’s at Anvil Pub on a Sunday, and Serious Pizza for a late night cravings. Plus, nobody cares if you have a BMW.
Knox-Henderson Avenue Everything from The Old Monk, Victor Tangos, Vickery Park, Capitol Pub, The Dram, Barcadia, Fernando’s brunch, Toulose, Corner Bar, Velvet Taco, Henderson Market, and there is a Starbucks! One of my favorite neighborhoods I have ever lived.
Greenville Avenue Off Greenville Avenue between Mockingbird and Ross, anywhere 2-3 blocks away. Make sure you are no closer than McMillian or Matilda. Easy access to Truck Yard, brunch on the roof top of HG Supply, Trader Joes, and the Libertine. The Blind Butcher’s back patio should be open until 2am, but I digress for now. Greenville Avenue Parade day is just one day. Embrace it and STFU.
The Design District just made the list. Not 5 years ago, but now for certain. You have Meddlesome Moth, Irving Boulevard to help alleviate Stemmons (I35) traffic, Rodeo Goat burgers, SER at the Anatole, Bowlounge, and Community Brewing. You won’t find anyone doing Jager Bombs or peeing in your parking garage over here.
Uptown north of Blackburn Really Close to The Rustic, Mutts Cantina, MiCocina, and “The” Whataburger. There are some really good finds near Blackburn and Travis or on the east side of 75 – Central Expressyway where I presently live by Capitol and Haskell. Do you know where Bryan Street Tavern is…? Maybe you should find out? Drive east.
Lakewood is definitely not for most 25 year set, but it’s civilized and near White Rock Lake. Go to the Goat twice, just twice, and bring bail money. Cosmo’s for night caps and pizza, Gingerman for craft beer. Don’t forget about Goldrush Cafe for breakfast.
Uptown If you really need to be in Uptown try near Maple and Wolf but it will cost you. Stoneleigh P, Common Table, and Katy Trail Ice House are close by bars. A 10 minute walk to AAC or any of your Uptown favorites. Close by are Nick and Sams Steak House and The Mansion if you’re feeling upscale. Another section of Uptown away from bass, exhaust, and Ubers is near State-Thomas and Ellis. You can walk to Parliament, McKinney Avenue Tavern, The Standard Pour, Klyde Warren park, or quickly walk your dog at Griggs Park.
You can still live in Uptown without huge headaches. Area’s to avoid are Cedar Springs and Routh near KungFu. and Concrete Cowboy, McKinney and Routh near Fat Rabbit and Social House, McKinney and Hall near So&So’s, McKinney and Allen right next to Avenue, McKinney and Worthington by The Den, McKiney and Boll by Idle Rich/Blackfriar, or by the AAC which is home to the Dallas Stars, Dallas Mavericks, and Bieber concerts. P.S. Shame on you, non observant son of a bitch, yeah… That’s a club you just signed a lease next to. I am also sorry if you’ve been in Uptown for 10-15 years and have watched this happen, but you have to evolve just like everyone else… get out of your bubble.
