No Valentine’s Day is complete without a visit to Dude, Sweet Chocolate, the bad boy of chocolatiers in Dallas run by chef Katherine Clapner. You may have seen Clapner recently on Beat Bobby Flay, where she indeed did beat the Flay handily using her cheffy wiles to out chef the chef. She is also the creator of such delicious chocolates as Albatross (on our list of 75 things we miss most about Dallas) a blue cheese infused bonbon that impresses us anew with each taste adventure.
In fact, you will not find milk chocolate or even chocolate covered strawberries in one of the many Dude, Sweet locations around Dallas and Fort Worth. This is strictly a dark chocolate shop with unusual flavor combinations that will excite food purists. First timers are encouraged to sample the many flavors treats at the original Bishop Arts location where they will handle you with kid gloves as you discover which flavor-infused chocolate is best for your palate. All the locations will sample for you, but we have a fondness for the funky original store. You will also find chocolate-infused booze that works great in recipes and coffee. Sample you must, love you will.
Dude, Sweet Heart of Valentine’s Past
Each Valentine season Dude, Sweet is particularly busy, as you might understand. Chef Clapner typically creates something particularly unusual to gift your Valentine and 2017 is no different. In the past she created an anatomically correct human heart made of chocolate and filled with special treats. We know of at least one Dallas cardiologist that bought a handful for his colleagues.
This year you will find a Valentine-looking heart wrapped in chocolate barbed wire. The heart is made from dark chocolate and loaded Yerba Mate Truffle filling. This is definitely for the bad boy or girl in your life that prefers things a bit alternative, or simply loves chocolate. A full pound and a half of chocolate will have them giddy for weeks, taking a slice of your heart at a time. There is simply not a more unique gift anywhere.
The heart is weighty and costs $45. Because of recent national attention this year’s Dude, Sweet Valentine special will not last long, so best you high-tail it to one of their locations. In Fort Worth go to 2925 Crockett. In Dallas check in at 1925 Greenville. In Bishop Arts the address is 408 W 8th, and in Plano its 1016 E 15th in the old downtown area.
Mention craveDFW and they might be apt to grin. Nothing else, just a grin. Happy Valentine’s Day.
