In 1956, Joe Barraco Sr. opened a grocery store at 2919 Bryan St. in Dallas, which along with Jimmy’s Food Store was part of Dallas’ Little Italy with bakeries, cleaners, florists and the like – all Italian. After many successful years in the grocery business, the Barraco family decided to expand their passion for food by opening the original Prego Pasta House on Greenville Ave in September 1982. For over 42 years, Prego has been a cherished destination for those seeking the warmth and comfort of a home-cooked meal.
At the heart of Prego’s enduring success is the love and dedication that Joe’s wife, Rose, infused into the menu with her cherished family recipes. These culinary secrets, passed down through generations, create a sense of authenticity that diners have come to know and love. Prego is committed to serving the finest foods, prepared with high-quality ingredients. The restaurant even boasts its own famous sausage, ensuring a distinctive flavor in every dish.
Among the many Italian specialties, dishes like Eggplant Parmigiano stand out. This classic combines tender slices of eggplant, layered with rich marinara sauce and melted cheese, creating a comforting and hearty meal. Another highlight is the crab claws, which offer a taste of the sea with their delicate flavor and satisfying texture. Each dish reflects Prego’s commitment to quality and tradition, making every visit a celebration of Italian cuisine.

Interestingly, Prego also has a hidden gem on its menu: Chicken Fried Steak. This secret item showcases the restaurant’s versatility, blending Southern comfort food with Italian hospitality. Prepared with a crispy coating and served with a rich gravy, it’s a delightful surprise for those in the know. It speaks to Prego’s ability to adapt while remaining true to its roots.
The most vital aspect of Prego’s longevity is its loyal customers. For over three generations, families have gathered to share meals and create lasting memories at Prego. The restaurant promises courteous service and a dining experience that feels like home. We invite you to bring your friends and family to enjoy the magic of Prego. Experience the flavors, warmth, and tradition that have made Prego a beloved staple in the Dallas dining scene for over four decades.
