A Taste of Texas at Ham Orchards in Terrell

Just a short drive east of Dallas in the small town of Terrell, Ham Orchards has been a staple of Texas summers since it opened its gates in 1979. This family-owned farm has grown into a seasonal destination known for its abundant peach harvests, blackberries and fresh produce, Southern hospitality, and sweet and savory treats. Spanning around 100 acres and home to nearly 10,000 peach trees, Ham Orchards offers a farm experience that draws crowds from across the state each May through August.

The crown jewel of Ham Orchards is, of course, its legendary peaches. Available by the bag or in half-bushel boxes, the peaches here are known for their juicy flavor and are sold fresh from the orchard during the peak of summer. In addition to peaches, the farm also grows blackberries — which guests can pick themselves in the U-pick patch — and occasionally offers other seasonal fruits like strawberries, plums, watermelons, and cantaloupes. The on-site farm market is well-stocked with locally grown vegetables such as squash, tomatoes, onions, and sweet corn, all harvested fresh and arranged beautifully for visitors to take home.

Beyond produce, Ham Orchards is also a haven for those with a sweet tooth. The orchard’s on-site bakery serves a variety of homemade pies, including their signature peach pie, pecan, buttermilk, cherry, and more. You’ll also find rich, handmade fudge crafted fresh twice a week, along with old-fashioned fried pies that are the perfect portable snack. Local honey, jams, jellies, and pecans line the shelves of the farm store, making it a perfect place to pick up gifts or stock your pantry with unique Texas flavors.

When it’s time for lunch, visitors can head to the orchard’s outdoor pavilion, where barbecue is served up hot and fresh. The BBQ menu, run in partnership with Eddie Deen & Company Catering, includes brisket, sausage, and a crowd favorite — peach pulled pork — which blends sweet and smoky into a dish that embodies summer in Texas. Classic sides like potato salad, coleslaw, and baked beans round out the meal, while freshly brewed sweet tea (with a peach twist available) offers a cool complement.

The orchard isn’t just about food — it’s designed for creating memories. Families gather under shaded picnic tables, and kids enjoy watching trains go by on the nearby tracks. The entire setup encourages visitors to slow down, rock a while on the front porch in one of the many wooden rocking chairs, and savor a simpler, sweeter time.

Ham Orchards is open seasonally from mid-May through mid-August, operating Monday through Saturday, from 9 AM to 5 PM. Located at 11939 County Road 309, Terrell, Texas, the orchard is an ideal day trip destination for anyone looking to experience authentic East Texas charm.
