A new job posting for a Food Editor at the Dallas Morning News confirms the paper is building back out a real restaurant criticism operation, listing that the new hire will supervise both a dedicated restaurant critic and a food digital producer, two positions the paper hasn’t had staffed together in years.
The timing tracks with ownership changes at the paper. The Dallas Morning News now operates under Hearst, and the new posting suggests the company sees real value in restoring a function that’s become rare even among major metro dailies. Two food reporters, Sarah Blaskovich and Imelda GarcÃa, currently carry the paper’s day-to-day restaurant coverage, but neither has been tasked with the kind of formal, byline-driven reviews the paper stopped running consistently after 2019, with only scattered freelance restaurant columns keeping the format alive until 2022.
No start date or name has been announced yet, and the posting itself doesn’t specify exactly when reviews will resume. For a city with as much restaurant turnover as Dallas has had over the last few years, a fully staffed critic position at the paper of record is a real shift, one that will change how a meaningful share of Dallas diners decide where to eat next.
