Sugar & Sage Bakery Wants You Back for Lunch

For most of its life, Sugar & Sage Bakery has been a morning place. People come to the shop on Lovers Lane for a kouign-amann and a coffee, linger over a danish, maybe leave with a box of pastries. Now the bakery wants you back around noon.

Sugar & Sage has rolled out a lineup of five made-to-order sandwiches and wraps, and if you know anything about what executive chef Jill Bates does with butter and dough, you already know why that’s good news. The breads are baked in-house, the croissants come out of the same kitchen that turns out the bakery’s famous pastries, and the whole menu reads like it was put together by someone who understands that a great sandwich starts with what’s holding it together.

The one most people will order first is the Everything Chicken Salad Croissant. The croissant gets baked with everything bagel seasoning, then filled with a creamy poppy seed chicken salad, sweet grapes and crisp onions. It’s the Dallas ladies-who-lunch classic with a lot more personality, and the seasoning on that flaky crust is the part you’ll remember.

For something simpler, the Ham & Cheddar Croissant is exactly what it sounds like, done right. Black Forest ham and melted cheddar go into a warm, buttery French croissant, and that’s all it needs.

The Prosciutto & Gruyère Panini is the heartiest of the bunch, with prosciutto, red onion, melted Gruyère, peppery arugula and a little mayo pressed on house-made focaccia until the outside crisps. The Artisanal Caprese layers mozzarella, ripe tomatoes, basil pesto and a sweet balsamic reduction on freshly baked Italian bread. And for anyone keeping lunch light, the Turkey Caesar Wrap pairs roasted turkey with fresh greens, Caesar dressing and a parmesan crunch.

Selections change from day to day, so not every sandwich will be in the case every time you stop by. Consider that a good reason to come back.

The lunch menu is a natural next step for a bakery that has never been shy about crossing the line between sweet and savory. This is the kitchen behind the Cristo Amann, the pastry-and-sandwich hybrid that wraps the layered richness of a Monte Cristo inside a caramelized, laminated kouign-amann. We wrote about what goes into the Cristo Amann when it debuted, and it’s still the headliner. The new sandwiches feel like its everyday cousins.

That’s a big part of why Sugar & Sage keeps getting better. Alison and Ashley Weinstein opened the bakery in 2023, and with Bates running the kitchen, it has become one of those places that gives you a reason to return every season. This fall alone brought a cookie butter pear danish and a pumpkin cinnamon roll, and the kouign-amann remains the best reason to visit Lovers Lane. Now lunch is on that list too.

Order a sandwich, then grab something sweet for later. You’ll want to.
