The Lake House To Open In Old Dallas Bicycle Cafe Location

DSC05357by Steven Doyle

Meet John Schmitz and Eric Paulsen. Actually you may know these guys already; they have been serving you in several capacities for many years in a whole host of Dallas area restaurants and bars. Now the guys are about to open their own entry into the pub scene with their own new concept located in the old Dallas Bicycle Café location at 7510 E Northwest Hwy called The Lake House.

The Lake House will feature cocktails, craft beer and what they hope to be delicious bar food in an area bereft of this sort of talent. The pub hangs just off the White Rock Creek Trail and in the shares an enormous parking lot with Dallas Bike Works. The pair of new owners plan to work with the bike shop to gear events that will cater to riders who enjoy the trail, and liken the new spot to the Katy Trail.  Continue reading

Obzeet Is Relocating

obzeetby Steven Doyle

Have you been to Obzeet, the odd restaurant and bar that also sells exotic trinkets and patio accessories? They have one of the most interesting patios in Dallas that looks like a slice of the Caribbean replete with a pond and a tiki bar. This is also where you can find incredible live music in an area void of entertainment.   Continue reading

Mockingbird Taproom Officially Open

wingsby Steven Doyle

Last night the owners of Mockingbird Taproom finally held their grand opening just shy of a month in business and we were among the invited many who sampled their way through the menu of burgers, wings, tacos and various other kicked up versions of bar food. In addition to a large and well executed food menu, the Taproom boasts a fabulous brew list, with choices from all across North Texas and beyond.

This is another Restaurant America location. You know these guys from Chicago, they are single-handedly attempting to take over Dallas one restaurant at a time. They also own Primebar in Uptown and Park Tavern in the Shops at Park Lane. Both of these locations do superb business and for just reason. They also own the Townhouse Kitchen in the Galleria which has been altered several times, but still suffers from poor service and an even poorer menu.       Continue reading

Elbow Room To Re-Open Mid January

DSC01868by Steven Doyle

Back in September I reported that the Elbow Room had shuttered. Today I am told that the Elbow Room will re-open with new owners and most likely look and feel exactly the same. Many of the same bartenders and waitresses will join the team. In the past weeks I have run into a few of the alumni working at various bars across Dallas and they loved and miss the venue.   Continue reading

Behind The Stick: Sundown At The Granada’s Josh Hendrix

by Jason Kosmas

Sundown at the Granada is a true revitalization of the once deteriorating Greenville Avenue. Boasting local and seasonal dishes, many vegetarian options and craft beers, it also can be proud of Josh Hendrix. There is something very innocent about Josh Hendrix yet at the same time you feel like you are talking to the reincarnation of Hunter S. Thompson. He has an unyielding child-like passionate for the craft of making great cocktails that makes you feel good about what you are drinking.

This adds up to pride without arrogance and Josh delivers straight-forward well thought out drinks on his menu at Sundown. He is eager to learn and to pass on what he has discovered to others. I shared some drinks with Josh at the Granada and we talked about how he got into the craft of cocktail making. Hopefully this interview will get me a chance to bartend for the band JJ Grey and Mofro who is playing at the Granada on October 26th (yes Josh, I was serious).          Continue reading

Elbow Room In Dallas Is Closed *Update*

by Steven Doyle

The Elbow Room located at 3010 Gaston Road has shuttered, at least for the moment. Long tome employees at the Elbow Room claim the restaurant has actually been sold after a run in with the state over taxes. There is a hearing with the former owners Tuesday, September 18, 2012 over the tax matter and the dive bar could potentially open back up Wednesday afternoon under new ownership.       Continue reading

by Steven Doyle

We like Bryan Street Tavern. The food is good, the beer selection was recently upgraded with additional taps, the music is always fantastic and they run some fun promotions. Remember, this is where Tacopalooza took place this year.

Now ready yourself for some Labor Day weekend fun and excitement when the guys at Bryan Street throw their White Trash Bash this Sunday, September 2, 2012 starting at 2pm.          Continue reading
