by Steven Doyle

Let’s celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a splash of tequila.

On this special day thoughts may wander to the very first margarita machine that was invented in Dallas by restaurant owner Mariano Martinez in 1971. The Smithsonian was so thirsty they nabbed  the machine and is on view at the DC museum.

holt

Suerte Tequila Sponsors Epic Cinco Fiesta at Industry Alley on Friday, May 5th, featuring $5 Suerte cocktails, serving $5 taqueria style pork tacos by Justin Holt, mariachis, and piñatas.

One of the many legends surrounding tequila is that it was originally discovered by luck. Well, actually it was by a rabbit. Or rather by a farmer’s wife who noticed the rabbit getting tipsy on fermented agave. Suerte, which means ‘luck’ in Spanish, would like to share their luck with you to celebrate Cinco de Mayo at Industry Alley.  Continue reading

Mico Rodriguez To Headline Oral Fixation For Cinco de Mayo

Mico-Rodriguezby Steven Doyle

Two weeks from tonight, on Cinco de Mayo, Dallas’ live storytelling series Oral Fixation will complete its overwhelmingly popular 3rd season at AT&T Performing Arts Center’s Wyly Theatre with a dynamic and diverse evening of outrageously juicy true tales on the theme “The Whole Enchilada.”  It’s been an amazing season and they plan on going out with a bang.
The biggest catch of this cast is undoubtedly Mico Rodriguez of “Mr Mesero” (and of course founder of Mi Cocina) fame who will come out of the shadows to share his fascinating tale of success and struggle in the Tex Mex biz.  Mico is this fantastic storyteller, who often conjures these intricate back stories for his restaurants. Also noteworthy are a Dallas Observer writer’s raunchy play-by-play at a recent enchilada-eating contest and a woman’s remarkable journey through evangelism and sexuality conversion therapy to accepting herself as she is.
